Charity speaks out about horse treatment in Oscar Pistorius race

World Horse Welfare has described the treatment of an Arabian horse racing a Paralympian in Qatar on Wednesday as "utterly barbaric"

The race, which pitted gold-medal winning Paralympian Oscar Pistorius against an Arabian horse in a 100-metre sprint, was a charitable event designed to raise awareness of disabilities and the positive contribution those with disabilities can have on communities. It was held in Doha, Qatar.

World Horse Welfare commented on the race beforehand saying they didn't see any welfare concerns as long as the horse was treated well. However, after seeing the race, Deputy Chief Executive Tony Tyler says: "World Horse Welfare are appalled at the way the jockey used the whip, which was not only completely unnecessary but utterly barbaric.

"Excessive whip use like this is a disgrace to racing as a sport. We applaud the achievements of Oscar Pistorius and his race could have been a great spectacle, but instead it was marred by the flagrant abuse of this horse."
