Trailer insurance can give you that extra peace of mind when you’re travelling with your horse

As any horse owner or rider knows, there’s often a fair amount of travelling involved when it comes to horses, whether that’s heading off to competitions, the vet or any other appointments, or simply somewhere new for a hack.

We talked to The Insurance Emporium about the importance of insurance, not only for your horse but for your trailer, too, because it doesn’t matter if your horse is transporting you or you’re transporting your horse, accidents can happen anywhere.

Here’s what they had to say.

A sound investment

While horses can bring a lot of pleasure, they’re not the cheapest animals to own. Apart from the initial cost of buying your horse, there are livery costs, feed, bedding, farriers, dentists, tack and vet fees for routine treatments such as vaccinations. It can all add up quite quickly, so imagine having to suddenly find the money to pay vet fees after an accident or illness, or what if you’re at an event and your horse is spooked and kicks out at another horse, or even a rider? These unexpected bills can end up being pretty large.

Having a suitable insurance policy may be important for your horse and his care, so it could be worth considering. For good all-round policies, those at The Insurance Emporium come with cover for death, theft or straying as standard, but you can also add other benefits as required, including public liability, personal accident and vet fees for injury and illness.

Out and about

While you’re not legally obliged to have horse trailer insurance, towing a trailer does come with risks, so having reliable cover is advisable if you do any of the following…

  • Attend horse shows or other events either in the UK or Europe
  • Buy or sell horses
  • Own stables
  • Train horses
  • Take your horse on holiday either in the UK or Europe

Horse trailer insurance with The Insurance Emporium always includes cover for fire, theft and accidental damage, but you can add extras to suit your needs, such as loss of entry fees, European cover, and UK recovery and replacement hire. The only policy requirement is for a proprietary wheel clamp (that fits into the recessed well on the inside of the wheel) to be fitted when your trailer isn’t in use or is in use but unattended.

Transportation is a necessary part of equestrian life, so, if you want to avoid unexpected large bills, it makes sense to consider insuring your trailer as well as your horse.
