When setting up an insurance policy, we don’t always know what we’ll want to do with our horses down the line. Find out whether you need a whole new policy here

With great ground and good weather, trying a one-day event could be a fun day out for you and your horse. But will you need a new insurance policy to cover you for cross-country riding?

KBIS Equine Policy Administrator Josie Mead explains…

As part of your policy, your horse will be in a particular class of use that determines the activities he’s permitted to take part in for the insurance to remain valid.

Often, low-level cross-country – for example, up to and including 90cm – is included in the same group as Riding Club activities, fun rides and low-level dressage and showjumping. This is because insurance underwriters set these groups in terms of how much risk they pose.

If any changes are necessary, it’s likely that it’d be a simple increase to the class of use your horse is insured in, rather than needing to change the entire policy. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, give your insurance company a call and they’ll be happy to advise whether there are any changes needed to include this.

Remember, the class of use must also reflect the level your horse is working to at home – not just when considering taking him to a competition. So, if you’re going cross-country schooling make sure this is still covered.

TOP TIP

The additional premium charge for increasing the class of use is usually quite small, so don’t be put off.
