Are parsnips OK

Postby jimama » Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:11 am

A friend's horse wouldn't touch the parsnips she offered him, but mine wasn't so fussy - but then he will eat ANYTHING! Are they OK, however, for horses? He's had the occasional swede-on-a-string in his stable, but he just devours it in seconds!

Never tried a parsnip but my pony destroyed a swede in minutes!

Yes, my horse can also destroy a swede in minutes! And I thought the idea was that by hanging a swede in your horse's stable, it would provide hours of fun and amusement for them - not so!

Tell you what as well . . . I'm always worried by the swede thing, because surely they could be prone to choking on them. Any thoughts?

During a period of box rest I used to give my boy a swede on a string in the stable every day, but he got quite aggressive towards it, lunging at it to take chunks out of it and then getting hit on the head in the process. I resorted to leaving it on the floor so it would roll around which kept him busy.

I have never tried parsnips - but swedes do seem to go down well.

I guess that if swedes are OK for horses, then parsnips should be, too - after all, they're from the same family. However, guess we've just got to be a bit careful how we cut them up - the same was as carrots, I suppose.

Doods loves parsnips as much as she loves carrots! I think she can hear me peeling parsnips at 100 paces! 'Cos she looks over the fence if she's infront of the kitchen window. She loves them more than my cat loves cheese, and that's saying something!
