Lightbulbs

Postby horse_girl » Fri Oct 23, 2009 2:39 pm

My friend wants to induce oestrus in her mare, and she's going to use light therapy to get her melanin levels up. How long after starting to extend 'daylight' hours with lightbulbs can she expect to see the effects? And does it need to be introduced gradually?

Never used light for these reasons, but we did have the stable lights on timers starting in the late summer when the days got shorter to keep the horses from growing massive, wooly coats so we wouldn't have to clip before the fall championships, after which the horses were turned away and needed their coats. Of course they were rugged at first, but they look so much nicer in their own flat coats when you are competiting than clipped out (especially indoors, under lights) if you can keep them short.
