What's your view of Staffordshire Bull Terrier's and horses?

Postby CookieComeTrue » Sun Oct 21, 2012 8:24 pm

Mine is that they should be kept on lead. But 'Bad Owners Make Bad Dogs'. This is true, since over half the bad dog owners own Staffies, and treat them cruelly. How would they like it if our dog almost killed their horse?!

I think that people give Staffies a really bad name. It's not only Staffie's who attack horses - it's that the media loves to create a bit of hype around it. I suspect if you could get accurate figures for the dogs that actually attack horses, you'd have a complete mixture of breeds, including small dogs, too!

I do think that dogs should be put on a lead or kept under close control around horses or other livestock, but as usual, the good owners will do this and the bad owners won't.

I also think it is a massive generalisation to say that over half the bad dog owners own Staffies and treat them cruelly! Bad owners own all types of breeds of dog and they don't all treat them cruelly!

We have had local sheep, cows, goats and even an alpaca killed by dogs too. Half a local herd was killed by a Bullmastiff and it was really scary for the local riding school and owners. We still have problems.

Sounds like somebody needs to go to the local dog warden and tell them what's happening. All attacks on livestock should be reported whether injuries are occurred or not.

We had 5 farmers go to the police and they're keeping an eye on the men who did. CCTV showed a gang of 3 young men and 8 dogs on 3 local farms. They've been walking their dogs carelessly in the area.

People have seen dogs on their property. Apparently the dogs they get are strays who they inherit. They try and make some big news about lifestock being killed by dogs so they purposely let them on land and even shove them in fields with sheep! Theres:
2 staffies
1 bullmastiff
3 lancashire heelers
1 GSD
1 doberman
I don't see the point of these men trying to get something exciting to happen.

Sounds very odd to me but at least the police are aware of them and are watching their movements. Men like that give responsible dog owners a bad name.

Dogs in my area have attacked too, sheep especially. But these dogs were Labradors, not Staffies.
I always enjoy Staffie displays at Crufts(I saw Paul O'Grady performing with a Battersea dog).

Beautiful dogs. I pony my dog off my horse and they adore each other. With the right training these dogs are amazing family and horse pets!
