My horse has a medium workload and goes to shows a couple of times a month although can be very lazy and hard to going, are there any feeds or supplements to give him a little bit of extra energy without him putting on weight?

Hi,
I am sorry for the delay in replying. Providing that your horse is in the ideal body condition (5-5.5 on a scale of 1-9) and not carrying excess weight, horses with these types of temperaments do better on small amounts of feeds that have a high starch level, so in other words, feeds that are based more on the use of cereals and therefore starch to provide the energy. Cereals are digested quickly in the small intestine so that the release of energy is quick and can be used immeadiatly for the work that is being done and not used so much for weight gain. If you choose a performance feed you will also be able to feed smaller amounts to further help control the weight, as these feeds will have elevated levels of vitamins and minerals, meaning that the minimum feeding rates will be lower.
I recommend that you try Saracen Sports Horse Mix, which can be fed at an intake of 2.0 Kg per day.
Make sure that you are feeding enough forage also, as this must always form the basis of every horses diet.
