We don't have any horsey men on our yard but I wish we did. It is good to have a gender mix and not just for things that need fixing on the yard, but for interesting conversation and it adds a different dynamic.

Re: Where are all the horsey blokes?
I am completely new to horses world. I had two riding lessons and even if Im looking forward to the third one (tomorrow) when I am at the school I feel a bit intimidated because:
1- My ENglish is not very good and I can understand only half of what I am told.
2- Most of the riders at the school are kids who look at me like "clumsy boy"
3- As I never handled a horse before I dont feel very confortable yet around them.
So, if I am honest, I didnt even think before about how many man/women were at the school.
I'll check tomorrow!! :)

Keeping a low profile as I do perhaps?
I think maybe females see the yard just as much a social thing as sport or recreation. I'm usually polite to everyone around me though topics of conversation are seldom of mutual interest; making me appear a little 'offish' for want of a better word.
Have heard many times its 'handy' to have a male on the yard for odd jobs and more often than not I'm happy to help out - especially as our yard is 100% diy. After a while tho I feel it becomes expected.
Perhaps with a few more points of view posted here I might be able to work out where I'm going wrong.
Hope Ive not offended anybody - its an interesting topic tho!

Re: Where are all the horsey blokes?
At my RS there have been 3 teenage boys i have known, some younger boys and 2 male liveries - one is into dressage and the other is a happy hacker. There was also a man who used to ride in my lesson - he was in his 60s and a real dare devil - we went skiing and broke his leg and always wanted to go on the mental horses who were fast! we had some craic with him cos he could never hear and he just tore round the place lol!
I also know several men outside of the RS, one has a handful of his own and does the odd hunt, one has a horse (used to have 2) and did riding club jumping and hunting, one has a livery yard and breaking and schooling yard and is involved with the pony club, a couple of showjumpers live near me, one has a private yard and hacks out, does hunting, etc. , another runs a tack shop and has his own yard with racehorses, emm cant think of any more at the mo...!

Re: Where are all the horsey blokes?
One of my biggest horsey hobbies is medieval re-enactment so I meet horse blokes all the time ;) And they are knights!
I think some of the problem is that we ladies tend to be hysterical about out horses and when men wants to play cowboy or knight, jump high fences or whatever we tell them how dangerous that is and explains why they can't do that... At least horse girls back in Norway are horrible when it comes to being hysterical! Everything should be done perfecty and the horse can DIE if you don't groom it properly =P No wonder the boys just turn around on the doorstep...
Let men be men! Don't force them to do dressage or braid manes if they want to try riding with armour or go hacking the whole day with their cowboyhat. When they've discovered that horses are fun they will probably want to get better and then we can offer them lessons ;)
Every knight comes to the point where he realizes that he will get nowhere without some real background training and all the blokes I know are training classical dressage for pure life. But if we don't let them play and do stuff we'd never dare first, they'll never come around...

If my spelling is full of bugs it's because I'm Norwegian.

Nice to see there are a few chaps on here, from all ranges of riding, beginners right up to owning four horses!

Re: Where are all the horsey blokes?
Sorry for delayed reply Pukka pony but I've been hibernating!! Well I wish!! Been busy with the horses and the snow etc.
yes you are right we are two male owner riders. I find the wome at our yard are quite amazed that we can manage to look after the horses so well and keep them alive!! lol. One lady cant believe how well we muck but I cant bear mess and muck out with gloves to get all the little bits out and hate brown beds so spend fortunes on shavings!! I also like to keep them looking smart so get their rugs regularly washed and if the rugs are light enough I cram them into my washing machine!!
Most yards are always 99% women and I dont feel embarrassed or intimidated but that's probably because I've always been around horses so dont feel I have to impress.

Re: Where are all the horsey blokes?
My boyfriend and I, as part of our rental agreement, look after our landlord's horses every other weekend. Although we have the opportunity to ride, I sadly haven't got round to teaching my other half yet - even though we've benn doing it a year!
He's really keen to hop on and, although he would be a total novice riding-wise, having to look after 3 horses every other weekend as part of our agreement has helped him learn the groundwork pretty pronto and he is now super-confident leading, catching and grooming!!
Just gotta get him on board now..

Re: Where are all the horsey blokes?
I'm the only bloke who indulges in riding on our yard. There's one other chap who used to ride, but he hasn't had any desire to do so since a bad fall some time ago.
Anyway, just to prove I'm not talking a lot of hot air, here's me on Bracken ("a man's horse", as someone told me!) a few weeks ago:
