With its infamous wet winters, you can’t always afford to be a fair weather rider here in the UK – especially if you have a schooling, hacking or competition schedule to stick to. Cue long riding coats – they’re an essential piece of kit if you’re keen to keep yourself, and your saddle, dry all winter long, while maintaining a comfortable, workable temperature while riding.

Our testers: The coats were tested in all conditions for schooling, hacking, competition days and yard work. With such a diverse range on test, our best in test and best value decisions were largely based on which fit the category of ‘long riding coats’ most suitably, so we selected those that performed best in the saddle. Our testers carefully examined the breathability and water-tightness of each coat, as well as the extent and security of their rider coverage. Our testers also examined the hoods of their jackets closely, noting their properties such as adjustability and whether or not they were stowable. While hoods aren’t necessary for riding, they made a big difference on the ground.
