Want to invest in purpose-made riding tops that really work? We put a selection to the test!

Did you know? Keeping cool is essential, as your body functions best when its temperature is between 36.5–37.5°C.

Grip hem

We say…

Eye-catching design that offered a close, comfortable fit due to the compressive nature of the fabric. Mesh panels to the back, sides, shoulders and underarms allowed for extra airflow, although the back was quite revealing if not worn with a layer underneath. The grip hem was brilliant and stopped the top moving, even when jumping. This top really helped with staying cool and comfortable and the well-thought-out design ensured a good fit and great performance. Washed and kept its shape.

Moisture wicking

We say…

Great-looking top. Better as a layer on colder days, but it prevents you from getting too hot and so came into its own on the cross-country course. It was very breathable especially during intense training sessions. Comfortable to wear, although a looser fit in the shoulder than the rest of the body. It had a tendency to ride up sometimes, but overall performed well at wicking away sweat.

Extra grip around hem

We say…

Smart top with subtle branding. The fabric was soft and comfortable. It provided a longer-length fit, with extra grip around the hem and sleeves to prevent them from riding up. It’s thicker than some so, although it wicked well, it wasn’t the coolest top for hotter days, although fine for cooler weather and the colder months. Washed well and kept its shape.

We say…

Stylish and practical, with a large selection of colour options available. The stretchy fabric was slightly thicker than others, but it was still breathable and wasn’t clingy, making it comfortable to ride in and flattering. The zip was useful for changing weather conditions. It performed well and dried quickly, making it great for regular wear and suitable in all weather conditions. Easy to care for, though best suited to a cool wash. A go-to top for everyday wear.

We say…

It offered a close, flattering fit and didn’t cling. Easy to move in and comfortable to ride in, even for long periods of time. The zip is handy for cooling off, or wrapping up from the elements. However, it’s starting to show some signs of wear, with bobbling on the material due to it rubbing on other garments. A great year-round top that’s smart enough on its own or sits well under a layer.

Compressive support to aid posture

Zip pocket on arm

We say…

The internal structure ensured a snug fit and it stayed in place without restricting movement. Felt an improvement in posture when wearing. Material was thicker than some of the others, so best suited to cooler days. A close fit due to the nature of the top, so size up if you prefer a more relaxed look. After regular washing it shrank slightly. A smart top and worth the money if you need extra support.

Classy, simple design that paired well with different breeches. Generous fit so size down if you’re between sizes or prefer a more tailored look. The fabric allowed for great freedom of movement. Fitted neatly under another layer when needed. The mesh panels were great for keeping cool on warmer days. Easy to wash and dry, and has kept its shape well.

We say…

Smart top with a fun but subtle pattern. The fabric was soft and comfortable and the top was light enough to be worn on its own or layered up in colder temperatures if needed. The breathable material worked best during warmer weather. It offered a close fit with no uncomfortable seams and it didn’t feel clingy or restrictive. It washed well, was quick to dry and the pattern shows no real signs of wear. Great value for a durable, everyday training top.
