Le-Chameau-Vierzonord-TNT
RRP
£200

Le Chameau Women’s Vierzonord

Warm neoprene lined boots with an adjustable, waterproof gusset and an anti-fatigue footbed.

We say…

Offered a shoe-like fit making them easy to get on but a little harder to get off – useful in thick mud, though, when they also offer excellent grip. May be a tight fit for wider feet. The adjustable calf was great for tucking in waterproofs and stopping bedding from falling into them. Kept feet toasty. Have been used for long distance walking and on the yard and they’re showing no abnormal signs of wear. The tread offered secure footing even on wet surfaces. Easy to hose off and clean.

Ariat-Burford-Insulated-Zip-TNT
RRP
£200

Ariat Women’s Burford Insulated Zip

Waterproof, insulated boots with a full-length zip. Shock absorbing footbed, moisture-wicking, neoprene lining.

We say…

Smart looking boots with a snug fit that became comfortable after a few wears. Good height that didn’t catch on the back of the knees. The full-length side zip was great for getting the boots on and off. Didn’t leak. The sturdy top popper prevented the zip coming undone and has stood up well to regular use. Cushioned footbed is great for long days on your feet. The tread offered superb grip in all weathers. More expensive than I’d usually go for, but they have great features and keep your feet warm and dry, so warrant the price tag.

Aigle-Parcours-2-TNT
RRP
£149.98

Aigle Parcours 2

Anti-fatigue boots with tri-density rubber sole, shock absorbing cushioning and a tailored fit around the ankle.

We say…

Light and flexible, they offered a great fit despite not being adjustable. Provided plenty of support. Really impressed with the warmth as I usually suffer with cold feet. The footbed was so comfy and springy, great for long-distance walking and prolonged use. They grip well in muddy conditions and the heel feels solid and balanced. Showing no signs of wear. Easy to slip on but can be harder to get off. Well worth the money if you’re planning on wearing them regularly for long periods of time and suffer from the cold.

The-Original-Muck-Boot-Company-chore-classic-tall-TNT
RRP
£130

The Original Muck Boot Company Women’s Chore Classic tall

Waterproof welly with neoprene calf, air mesh lining, reinforced toe and heel plus additional arch support.

We say…

Comfy boots with a supportive fit around the ankle, which prevented them from pulling off in the mud. Very robust around the heel and toe. True to size fit. Bulkier than some boots but provided warmth and protection. The tread provided decent traction and reduced slipping. Great for tough, outdoor jobs with a cushioned footbed that meant you could wear them all day. A good length in the leg and the top collar stopped the worst of the bedding and hay falling into the boots. Easy to clean.

Grubs-frostline-5.0-TNT
RRP
£94.95

Grubs Frostline 5.0

Waterproof and insulating welly with a moisture-wicking lining, stretch neoprene calf and cushioned footbed.

We say…

Found the sizing to be slightly on the generous size. Nice to have the choice of stand and more vibrant colour options. Stood up well to regular wear with no signs of unexpected damage. Kept feet really warm – if you suffer from cold feet these will really help you out in freezing temperatures. Comfortable and very grippy, making them excellent for walking on all surfaces even wet grass and mud. Have proven to be hard wearing and versatile but best suited to colder conditions.

Hy-Equestrian-mud-boots_TNT
RRP
£69.99

Hy Equestrian Mud boots

Lightweight and durable boots with a waterproof foot, neoprene upper and breathable lining.

We say…

Comfortable boots even after long periods. Didn’t need wearing in. Easy to get on and off. Shorter in height than some but still offered protection from the wet and mud, although would’ve preferred a taller boot for carrying out yard jobs. There are some small signs of wear to the tread but overall they’ve stood up well to mucking out and long-distance walking/ They were quite warm, which made them more suitable to colder temperatures. Simple to clean, you can wash off the rubber boots and brush over the neoprene upper.

GS-Equestrian-Rippon-Neoprene-TNT
RRP
£79.95

Kept feet warm in colder weather without the need for extra socks. The kick spur on the back was helpful for removing boots easily. Came up well after a hose down. Showing no signs of leaks or cracks. A great value welly that was perfect for everyday yard chores.

RRP
£205

Stierna Storm Rain Pants

Waterproof and breathable with taped seams. Full-length zips, adjustable waist and foot strap, and pre-shaped knees.

  • Adjustable
  • Full seat

We say…

I wore them to ride in the pouring rain and the silicone seat and knee gave me good grip. They’d suit a taller rider due to the long leg length and the fit was snug, but not too tight. The foot straps and silicone grips were handy when riding, as the trousers then didn’t ride up my legs. The poppers and zips were secure and the Velcro straps on the waistband were useful. I’d have appreciated pockets.

We say…

I wore these for yard chores and to ride, and gave them a good test in an extremely heavy downpour out on a two-hour ride. They kept me warm and dry, although a little water got through the zips on the legs. I found them a nice fit and the zips made them easy to put on over wellies or riding boots. I also liked the reflective piping.

I loved these chaps – I wore them to ride and while doing yard chores and they were very comfy. They were true to size, fully waterproof and I really appreciated the stirrup straps, which stopped them riding up. The zips up the side made them easy to put on and take off, and the elasticated waist was really comfy. The two zipped side pockets were big enough for my phone, too.

We say…

The trousers were very comfortable, warm, waterproof and great for wearing all day even in cold, wet, windy conditions. I loved the zip and Velcro combination on the lower leg. They rode up a little, but not much. The zip phone pocket on the thigh is a good size and I found it very useful. Overall I’d say these are the best waterproof trousers I’ve ever worn.

RRP
£36.95

Derby House Pro microfibre-lined waterproof trousers

  • Adjustable

  • Pockets

We say…

I tested these trousers in heavy downpours and they kept my legs completely dry. The cosy lining was ideal for colder days, but they were a little too warm when I was doing yard jobs. I was impressed by the grip from the Clarino seat. The zips on the lower legs gave a great, tailored fit and made the trousers easy to put on and take off. The leg length makes them ideal for shorter riders.

Shires-Aubrion-waterproof trousers
RRP
£33.99

Shires Aubrion waterproof trousers

Unisex fit, pull-on design, elasticated waistband, reinforced hems, taped seams, water-repellent finish.

  • Adjustable

We say…

Very sleek and professional looking. They fitted well over my jodhpurs and didn’t feel tight. A good length that allowed me to fit them over my long riding boots, they were truly waterproof and kept me well protected, but they’re not very warm. It’s worth noting that, although there were gaps where your undertrousers would have pockets, the trousers themselves don’t have pockets.

Pikeur-Regen-chap
RRP
£99.95

Pikeur Regen Chaps

Fully waterproof, stretchy and designed to be pulled on over breeches.Full-length side zip and additional popper fastenings for adjustment.

  • Adjustable

We say…

I was initially apprehensive about the colour, however the black colourway would be practical. They were useful for slipping over breeches to keep them clean at shows, and kept me dry during moderate rain. The full-length zip on each side made them easy to pull on and take off. They’re quite expensive for a product that’s not for everyday use, but seem well made and are smart.

We say…

They were a good fit over breeches and boots, and came up true to size. They were completely waterproof and I was pleased to find they were breathable, too. The elasticated foot straps stopped them riding up and the reflective strips were handy in low light. The silicone seat was great, but I’d have liked grip on the inside lower leg too.

RRP
£82.50

Toggi Storm unisex waterproof overtrousers

We say…

I liked the look and fit of these trousers, and they kept me dry even in heavy rain. I wore them for riding and yard chores and they were comfortable all day. I particularly liked the fact the material didn’t rustle. The leg zips made them easy to put on and take off, and the popper fastenings at the ankles offered a snug fit. The zipped pockets were a generous size, too.

RRP
£27.50

Hy Equestrian waterproof pull-on overtrousers

Reflective panels on the lower leg, elasticated waistband, touch-tape ankle cuffs and two deep pockets.

  • Adjustable
  • Reflective
  • Pockets

We say…

My first impressions were that the material was quite thin and the leg rather wide. However, they kept me dry while riding and working on the yard. The reflective panels on the legs were great for hacking, and the two side pockets were deep, so things didn’t fall out. Ideal for warmer wet days, they’re quite long in the leg, so are well suited to taller riders.

£155

Uvex Exxential II LED Helmet

A helmet with a three-setting lighting system to allow the wearer to be seen in low or poor light

We say…

I’d never had an adjustable helmet before and was a bit worried how it would work. However, the adjustment dial was easy and sufficiently robust to prevent the fit altering during use. Ventilation was good and I found the hat to be very lightweight. The lights are a nice addition and are quite subtle when turned on, although the flashing mode is bright enough to make drivers take notice. The hat was easy to charge (it came with a cable) and the battery lasted ages, which was helpful given you’re unlikely to use the lights every time you ride.

Grip hem

We say…

Eye-catching design that offered a close, comfortable fit due to the compressive nature of the fabric. Mesh panels to the back, sides, shoulders and underarms allowed for extra airflow, although the back was quite revealing if not worn with a layer underneath. The grip hem was brilliant and stopped the top moving, even when jumping. This top really helped with staying cool and comfortable and the well-thought-out design ensured a good fit and great performance. Washed and kept its shape.

Moisture wicking

We say…

Great-looking top. Better as a layer on colder days, but it prevents you from getting too hot and so came into its own on the cross-country course. It was very breathable especially during intense training sessions. Comfortable to wear, although a looser fit in the shoulder than the rest of the body. It had a tendency to ride up sometimes, but overall performed well at wicking away sweat.

Glossy calfskin with a stretch elastic panel, square toe and ornamental logo.

Available in 132set height and width combinations

“If you want a touch of pizazz in your wardrobe, these are the boots for you. Sizing runs slim and quite tall, and I spent time breaking them in properly so they’d stay snug once softened. This was worth it, though – they’ve remained fitted around the ankle, but are still flexible. The grippy stretch panel aids fit and is useful in the rain. They started out gorgeous but, with appropriate care, their appearance is actually improving over time. They’re definitely an investment, but one that doesn’t scrimp on quality or style.”

Combined with the soft leather, this meant they never rubbed or made me sore, even if I wore them all day. The details and fastenings are still in perfect condition, although the leather has creased slightly at the ankle. I think they’re super-smart and striking – I often received compliments when out and about. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase them again.”

“These boots are so comfy and fitted my long legs perfectly. They’re true to size but, due to their figure-hugging fit, took three rides to break in. I wore them on the yard before and after riding, even in winter, but they’ve withstood this well and come up as good as new after cleaning. They’ve maintained their shape, helped by the fact that they come with boot trees and a bag. For the price tag, you can’t beat them – they’re brilliant and I’d invest in another pair in the future.”

Ariat Heritage Contour II Field Zip long competition boots
RRP
£270

Ariat Heritage Contour II Field Zip

Full-grain leather with an elasticated panel and moisture-wicking sock lining.

Available in a range of widths extra slim – wide, and a range of heights short – tall.

“These boots are sleek and stylish. They fitted well and were comfortable from the get-go, although I needed a narrower width than the size chart suggested. The fit around my leg has stayed snug and the ankles haven’t significantly dropped. I could wear them happily all day on the yard and in the saddle, and was even able to drive in them. I’d have preferred them to be a bit more water-resistant, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy them again in the future – not that I think they’ll need replacing any time soon, as they still clean up as good as new!”

Brogini Sanremo Field long competition boots
RRP
£245

Brogini Sanremo Field

Soft-grained leather, with a stitched toecap, elasticated panel and patent croc-effect details.

Available in a range of widths 000 – 4, and a range of heights short – tall.

“These boots were comfortable to walk and ride in, and I felt I had a close contact with my horse. They didn’t require a breaking in period, as the leather is so soft, and maintained their shape really well with boot trees. The zip at the back seems quite sturdy, and the poppers and laces are still in good condition. The height and foot size of the boots are perfect, but the calf width came up a little bigger then expected. They’re lovely boots and everyone has commented how smart they look.”

Tredstep Donatello SQ Field long competition boots
RRP
£239.99

Tredstep Donatello SQ Field

Made from full-grain nappa leather, with a leather lining, high-impact footbed, stretch panel and anti-fatigue sole.

Available in a range of widths extra slim – full, and heights regular or tall

“My favourite thing about these boots is how comfortable yet elegant they are, setting them apart from most others I’ve worn. The cushioned footbed makes them almost as comfy as trainers to wear all day, while the supple leather gives them a slim, smart fit. They required no breaking in, but did drop after a few weeks, leaving them with more bulk around the ankles. I like the zip covers, which keep the zip clean. Overall I think they strike a great balance between comfort, style and value.”

Felix Bühler Milano Field long competition boots
RRP
£229

Felix Bühler Milano Field

Square-toed boots made from Italian cowhide, with a pigskin lining, elastic insert and shock-absorbing footbed.

Available in a range of widths extra slim – wide, and regular or high heights.

“These boots were comfortable from day one – in fact, they’ve ruined me for anything else! I wore them for riding and general yard duties without any problems. They only needed a quick wipe-over to look great, even after being covered in mud. I’m usually between short and regular length, but as these boots were so soft I could take the regular length, meaning they were perfect after they dropped slightly. For the price, I think they’re great and would recommend them without hesitation.”

Mark Todd Competition Field boots
RRP
£217.99

Mark Todd Competition Field

Soft, quality leather with a discreet elastic panel, zip guard and slimline sole.

Available in a range of widths slim – wide, and short or standard heights.

“These boots were comfortable for riding and I could walk in them straight away without any rubbing. I like that they’re lightweight, and they don’t interfere with my leg contact or feel bulky in the stirrup. The elastic panel makes them easy to put on and ensures they move with you as your leg bends. Through regular wear and cleaning, the leather has become lovely and soft and, while there are a few wrinkles at the ankle, it hasn’t stretched or sagged. They still look super-smart, especially after a polish.”

Dublin Galtymore Tall Field competition boots
RRP
£214.99

Dublin Galtymore Tall Field

Full-grain leather with an elasticated panel and wicking sock liner.

Available in regular or wide widths and short or regular heights.

“I usually struggle to find long boots in my size, but these fit really well. The supple leather meant I could put them on and ride without the need to break them in. They’re comfy to ride in and helped to encourage a better ankle position, but I could still walk around the yard and at shows. They polished up really well, looking like new in no time. They’ve wrinkled slightly down the leg, but this hasn’t affected their use and they still look smart. I’m really pleased with these boots and wouldn’t hesitate to buy another pair.”

Caldene Casoria long competition boots
RRP
£175

Caldene Casoria

Featuring a suede inner calf, full-length zip and decorative elasticated laces.

“I was able to ride in the boots straight away because they’re so supple, and the suede helped to keep my lower leg still, too. Unfortunately, they rubbed where the upper meets the foot section, and it was a few weeks before I was truly comfortable walking in them. The soft leather fits snugly around your leg, but the lack of a leather lining means they need boot trees to keep their shape. The leather polishes up well, while a suede brush tidies up the calves. For the price, they’re a budget boot that looks the part.”

Just Togs Buckingham long competition boots
RRP
£169.99

Just Togs Buckingham

Soft, grained leather with decorative laces, a zip guard and stitched toecaps.

Available in a range of widths, medium narrow – wide

“These boots were very comfortable for riding or wearing around the yard, although they took a week or two of regular wear to break in due to their close fit. They looked smart and stylish, and I found they were easy to keep clean. Although the poppers on the zip guards could occasionally come undone, this didn’t get in the way or affect how well I could use my leg while riding. Overall, I think they’re practical, entry-level leather boots that perform well, and I feel the price is very reasonable.”

Horseware Ireland Long Leather Riding competition boots
RRP
£154.95

Horseware Ireland Long Leather Riding

Made from quality, soft leather, with a dress lace front, durable sole, elasticated panel and zip guard.

Available in regular or wide widths

“The boots coped well with wet, muddy yard duties and, as they’re comfortable and very lightweight, I was able to walk freely in them all day. However, they took a few wears to break in. They helped keep my leg secure, but without the stiffness you can get with some brands. The zip is sturdy and they’ve kept their shape well. A quick wipe-over was enough to get them looking their best, even if they’d been wet and dirty all day. They’re tough boots with no marks on them after a hard test.”

Shires Moretta Gianna long competition boots
RRP
£119.99

Shires Moretta Gianna

Mock lace details, anti-fatigue soles, shock-absorbing insoles and a wicking lining.

Available in a range of widths from slim – wide

“I liked the style of these boots and the soft leather didn’t restrict my calf like some others have done. They were a great fit, but took a week to break in around the ankles, as they could rub a bit. Once I’d worn them a couple of times, though, they were really comfy. As well as schooling, they looked the part at competitions and held up to walking around the showground all day. They were easy to keep clean, with robust fastenings and tough soles. For the price, they’re smart, versatile boots.”

Fouganza LB 560 long competition boots
RRP
£79.99

Fouganza LB 560

Supple leather, with a wide elastic band at the calf, full-length zip, spur guards and a stitched sole.

Available in 2 set height and width combinations

“The boots were comfortable from the minute I put them on. They were great for riding and walking around the yard – you’d hardly know you had riding boots on. They’ve maintained their shape and were easy to clean with regular boot polish. The zip ran smoothly, and they were easy to put on and take off. It’s worth trying them on before purchasing, as there are limited height and width options, and I found the ankle quite generous. Overall they’re a comfortable boot for a very reasonable price.”

Musto Action Primaloft midlayer jacket review
RRP
£175

Musto Action Primaloft

Breathable and water-resistant, with elastane cuffs, technical insulation and an arched front hem.

Features zip pockets and water-repellent

I’ve hardly taken this jacket off during the test, and it’s seen me through hacking, lessons, yard work, walks and trips to town. It’s so lightweight and flexible that I often forgot I was wearing it, yet was still seriously warm. I never got sweaty, even if temperatures were mild, and it still looked pristine after some mucky yard jobs. It stood up well to wind and rain showers on its own, so I rarely needed anything over the top. At first I didn’t think I could justify the price, but it’s a practical and really versatile jacket.

Stierna Aurora 2.0 midlayer jacket review
RRP
£155

Stierna Aurora 2.0

Lightweight, water-resistant and windproof, this padded jacket has softshell panels and two pockets.

Features zip pockets, two-way zip and water-repellent

This is the best midlayer jacket I’ve owned. It’s windproof and breathable, and I didn’t get sweaty underneath. I was cosy without being too hot, and didn’t feel restricted at all. Nothing has stuck to it – not even dog hair. It’s smart enough to wear in town and, although designed with riding in mind, it’s very flattering, too. It has washed incredibly well and doesn’t take long to dry, which is very handy. I love this jacket and I wear it almost every day. I think it’s worth every penny and would definitely buy it again.

Horse Pilot Tempest midlayer jacket review
RRP
£111.50

Horse Pilot Tempest

Breathable and made from water-repellent stretch fabric, it has an asymmetrical zip and thumb holes.

Features zip pockets, thumb holes and water-repellent

This jacket was really comfortable and warm without being too heavy. It’s also effective against light rain. It felt a bit bulky with another layer over it, but I could still manage it. After a wash, it dried quickly and looked as good as new. The material didn’t seem to attract dirt and was easy to sponge down if needed, and I loved the thumb holes. I wore it lots and didn’t look out of place away from the yard. I feel it’s on the expensive side for a lightweight jacket, but not ridiculous and you get a lot of wear out of it.

PS of Sweden Zara midlayer jacket review
RRP
£110

PS of Sweden Zara

A lightly padded body, with four-way stretch inserts and sleeves, and a double-button collar.

Features zip pockets and two-way zip

I absolutely love this jacket. It’s the smartest thing I’ve ever worn on a horse and looks super away from the yard, too. The style is flattering, comfy and kept me really warm, but still allowed me to move freely. I could wear a baselayer underneath, and it also fitted well under another jacket when it was raining. It didn’t pick up any hair or hay, and the pockets were big enough for gloves and a phone, although there was a bit of a bulge when the pockets were full. It looked like new out of the wash and was fast-drying, too.

Schockemöhle Steena midlayer jacket review
RRP
£119.95

Schockemöhle Steena

A lightweight, quilted jacket with softshell sleeves, a fold-away hood and contrast details.

Features zip pockets, two-way zip and water-repellent

This is my new favourite yard jacket. It’s really flattering, but not restrictive when riding and doing yard work. The design is really stylish – the padded body kept me warm, while the flexible arms offered great freedom of movement. Nothing stuck to the material, but the arms could show the dust. It was great on its own, but also fitted under a waterproof without being too bulky. The foldaway hood is a great feature. It’s expensive, but I feel it’s worth the money because it’s so versatile.

Cavallo Ladina midlayer jacket review
RRP
£115

Cavallo Ladina

An insulating, sporty-fit fleece with contrast piping, embroidered details and flat seams.

Features zip pockets

I’ve worn this jacket daily, either as an outer layer or under a jacket. I’ve even worn it around the house because it’s so cosy. It’s warm but still very light, and it doesn’t feel bulky under layers. The contrasting zip and bindings are a stylish touch. It’s easy to wash and quick to dry, and a stubborn-looking stain even came out on a low-temperature wash. I like the soft elastic at the cuffs and neck, but these have bobbled slightly. The jacket is well made and good quality, but I think the price is high for a fleece.

Equetech Apollo midlayer jacket review
RRP
£93.50

Equetech Apollo

A lightweight, breathable softshell jacket with quilted panels and snaffle details.

Features two-way zip and water-repellent

The jacket was really comfortable and not too bulky. I wore it in wet, cold, windy weather and on warmer days, and it coped admirably with both. The pockets are deep enough for a phone and keys, I had no issues with hair sticking to it, and it looked as good as new after a wash. The downside is that, as a layer, it appeared and felt as though I was wearing two main jackets. On the plus side, it looks really stylish, so is equally appropriate away from the yard, and I think the price is fair.

Aigle Polarfield midlayer jacket review
RRP
£90

Aigle Polarfield

A robust, double-sided fleece with quilted panels and braided trim details.

Features zip pockets and two-way zip

This is really smart and fitted perfectly, and the high collar was amazing at keeping my neck warm. I happily used it on its own and as a layer, although I didn’t need much else on top as it kept me toasty. It was smart enough to wear away from the yard and the quilted sections on the front and back made it stand out. The zipped pockets were big enough for my valuables and kept them safe. Overall, I was really impressed with the performance and look of the jacket, and feel it’s worth the money.

Toggi Clarisse midlayer jacket review
RRP
£75

Toggi Clarisse

A lightweight padded body with stretchy ribbed panels, flattering stitch lines and gloss gold trims.

Features zip pockets

This jacket is the garment I never knew I needed. I normally ride in a fleece and gilet, as I hate the restriction of a normal jacket, but this kept my core warm and gave me enough flexibility though my shoulders to feel really comfortable in the saddle. It’s slim-fitting, so I could easily put a waterproof over the top, but also stands up as an outer layer when it’s milder. It doesn’t pick up hay or hair, dust is easily brushed off and it washes well. The zip pockets are big enough to carry my phone. Overall, it’s a really smart jacket that’s perfect for riding.

Ariat Freja midlayer jacket review
RRP
£70

Ariat Freja

A poly/spandex blend fabric with body contour seams and full-zip styling.

Features zip pockets

I was very impressed with the freedom of movement this jacket offered. The material is super-stretchy and offered no restrictions while riding or carrying out tasks around the yard, meaning it was comfortable to wear all day. It worked both under a heavier layer and on its own, so it’s perfect for year-round wear. The design is smart, stylish and flattering, although the pockets are a little on the small side. Hair, dust and hay brushed off easily, and it washed and dried very well. The price is a lot less than I was expecting, so I think it offers value for money.

Felix Bühler Leni midlayer jacket review
RRP
£29.90

Felix Bühler Leni

A soft, fitted fleece jacket with a lined collar and embroideries, plus a contrast zip and stitching.

Features a two-way zip and zip pockets.

I found this fleece really comfortable. The sizing was true and it was very cosy. It was great to wear on its own as an outer layer and I was really surprised at how warm it was. As an underlayer, I didn’t need much on over it. The fleece dried quickly after washing and I found the zip pockets were handy to keep my valuables safe. Overall, I was very happy with the fleece – it’s a brilliant addition to my winter wardrobe and I think it offers great value for money.

Decathlon 500 midlayer jacket review
RRP
£24.99

Decathlon 500

Soft fleece with quilted panels on the chest, arms and collar. Includes elastane cuffs and a high collar.

Features zip pockets

I love this jacket. It’s really comfortable and not restrictive at all, both in and out of the saddle. Because it’s not bulky, it’s great to wear under a heavier jacket as an extra layer, but was warm enough on its own, too. My favourite thing is the soft, high collar that goes up to just above your chin, really protecting you from a chilly wind. It’s quite smart, so not only did I live in it when I was at the yard, I also wore it out-and-about, too. I’d really recommend this fleece and I think it’s great value, too.

Noble Outfitters Explorer midlayer jacket review
RRP
£69.95

Noble Outfitters Explorer

A fleece jacket with a flat-face exterior and soft, brushed lining.

Features zip pockets, two-way zip and thumb holes

This fleece is a perfect weight for cooler days, worn on its own or with a gilet, and it works equally well under a jacket. I like the fitted style – it’s very smart, and a perfect length to ride in. The outer fabric doesn’t attract too much hair and it’s easy to sponge off if needed. Inside, the lining is cosy and soft, and I love the high neck that keeps the wind out. All the pockets are a useful size, with added security of zips on the outer ones. It’s a handy fleece that I’d buy again.

Mountain Horse Flow Tech midlayer jacket review
RRP
£60

Mountain Horse Flow Tech

A technical, lightweight fleece with a contrast zip, high collar and fitted cuffs.

Features zip pockets

I loved this jacket, it was so versatile and I’d happily wear it away from the yard. I found it comfortable and easy to move and ride in, and it worked well as a layer. The cut is flattering and meant it didn’t ride up under other jackets. It doesn’t pick up hay or hair, and any dust easily brushed off so it stayed looking smart. The pockets are the perfect size, and the zips gave me peace of mind. It was simple, quick and easy to wash and dry. All in all, it’s the perfect midlayer for me.

Dublin Joda Zip Thru midlayer jacket review
RRP
£54.99

Dublin Joda Zip Thru

Made from wicking fabric, with contrast details on the chest and shoulders.

Features zip pockets and thumb holes

The jacket was comfortable for riding and around the yard, and the shorter cut means it doesn’t bunch up when you’re in the saddle. The contrast panels and off-centre zip are stylish, so it doesn’t look out of place off the yard, either. I used it equally as a midlayer and on its own – it kept me super-warm on chillier mornings, but was great as a top layer on warmer evenings. The pockets were perfect for my phone or keys, and the thumb holes in the cuffs are a great feature for keeping warm.

Bridleway Rowan mid layer jacket review
RRP
£24.99

Bridleway Rowan

Made from breathable, wicking fabric, it has zipped pockets, elasticated cuffs and flat-lock seams.

Features zip pockets

This jacket is perfect for spring and autumn. It makes a handy extra layer on winter days, too, thanks to its thin, lightweight material. It’s highly breathable, acting a bit like a full-zip base layer. It washed well and, because of its technical fabric, dried quickly. The pockets were perfect for my phone and keys while riding and running. For the price, I think it’s great value for money if you’re looking for a lightweight layer, but it’s not quite warm enough to be worn on its own on cooler days.

Woof Wear Waterproof gloves
RRP
£33.00

Woof Wear Waterproof gloves

Breathable gloves with a thermal lining, synthetic suede palms and long cuffs.

Features velcro closure and waterproof outer

I really like these gloves – they kept my hands warm and dry, and the cuffs kept the rain and wind out. They aren’t bulky, which meant I could easily do fiddly tasks around the yard in them, and they offered excellent grip and feel on the reins while I was riding. However, I found the lining could slip a little. I’d buy them again because I think they’re versatile and good value for money.

Noble Outfitters Winter Show gloves
RRP
£24.95

Noble Outfitters Winter Show gloves

Lined with microfleece, they have leather palms and reinforced areas on the fingers.

Features velcro closure and water-resistant

I was impressed by these gloves. The palms were grippy, even when my horse was strong out hacking, and I had enough feel on the reins for schooling. They’re windproof and stood up well to rain. For such lightweight winter gloves, they’re really warm, but I’d have preferred a longer cuff, as I could get a gap between them and my jacket sleeves. Overall I think they’re great value and really smart.

Horse Health Pro Touch DryTex Waterproof gloves
RRP
£27.50

Horse Health Pro Touch DryTex Waterproof gloves

A softshell outer with a breathable membrane and insulated lining.

Features waterproof outer and silicone grip

The gloves had a very good grip, which was useful for both riding and yard work. They’re quite thick, so I preferred to hack in them rather than wear them for schooling, but I could still carry out most yard tasks with ease. They performed well in the rain, and kept my hands really warm and dry. I’d purchase them again for use in wet weather.

Horseware Competition gloves
RRP
£21.95

Horseware Competition gloves

Smart gloves with a digital printed palm, faux leather binding and elasticated wrist.

Features velcro closure and water-resistant

These gloves were very comfortable to ride in, with excellent grip and feel, and I was really pleased with how they performed. The mesh insert meant my hands didn’t get too hot, but it did allow the rain in and, because they don’t have a lining, I feel they’re best suited to warmer weather. However, they’re smart, and ideal for riding and competitions, so I’d buy them again.

Hy5 Water Repellent Softshell gloves
RRP
£18.99

Hy5 Water Repellent Softshell

A water-repellent outer and 40g insulation, with grip palms and long cuffs.

Features velcro closure, water-repellent and silicone grip

These gloves were fantastic in cold, wet weather. Personally, I found them a little bulky for riding, but they were great for on the yard and generally being outside. The grippy palms were helpful for carrying heavy buckets and handling tools. I found them easy to slip on and off, and they’ve stood up well to wet, muddy conditions. For the price I thought they were good value for money.

MacWet Sports gloves
RRP
£29.99

MacWet Sports gloves

Lightweight gloves made from technical, soft, non-slip fabric with mesh backs.

Features velcro closure

These gloves were very comfortable and grippy, even when it was really wet. They don’t keep your hands totally dry, but they’re designed to grip even when they’re wet through, which they do brilliantly. The mesh vents make them ideal for warmer weather and they’re tough enough to be used every day, but still smart to wear for competitions. I think they’re worth the money and I’d buy them again.

Samshield V-Skin gloves
RRP
£36.99

Samshield V-Skin gloves

Ultra-thin synthetic leather, with soft fabric palms and Spandex for stretch.

These were the best gloves I’ve ever had for grip, particularly in the wet. They resisted rain and, while not the warmest, were very breathable and flexible. I found them suitable to wear on the yard, too – the grip was second to none for handling tools. Although the design on the palms isn’t my usual style, I’d definitely buy these gloves again, as the flexibility and grip were the best I’ve had.

Kramer Impressive Winter gloves
RRP
£34.90

Kramer Impressive Winter gloves

Windproof, breathable gloves with knitted cuffs and a warm lining.

Features velcro closure, waterproof outer and silicone grip

These gloves were really comfy, and while they’re bulkier than my normal gloves, I still had sufficient feel on the reins for hacking and schooling. For a bulkier glove they’re pretty nimble and were fine to wear for most yard jobs, but I still took them off for fiddly tasks such as doing up my bridle or tightening my girth. I really rate them – they’re waterproof, windproof and really grippy, even when wet.

SSG 10 Below gloves
RRP
£39.99

SSG 10 Below gloves

Four-layer, breathable gloves with digital fabric palms and elastic wrist straps.

Features waterproof outer and touchscreen compatible

These gloves are really robust and perfect for around the yard. They’re ideal for very cold weather – very warm and waterproof. I found them a little bulky for my taste, particularly for riding, but the grip on the palms was great for leading horses in and out of stables without being too sticky. I thought the wrist straps were a really handy feature and I’d buy them again to wear on the yard.

Shires Neoprene Super Grip gloves
RRP
£15.99

Shires Neoprene Super Grip gloves

Insulating, softshell backs with faux nubuck palms and finger inserts.

Featuring water-resistant outer

I’m really impressed by these gloves – they’re warm, comfortable and excellent for all kinds of riding. The palms are grippy, and it was easy to adjust tack and do yard chores. The softshell repels water, but the finger inserts and palms aren’t waterproof, so moisture could seep in. I think the price is great for such reliable, hardwearing gloves, and I’d definitely buy another pair.

Mountain Horse Reflective gloves
RRP
£30.00

Mountain Horse Reflective gloves

Fleece-lined, with a reflective panel on the back and knitted cuffs.

I liked these gloves and they kept my hands dry in the rain. Personally, I found them a little bulky for riding, but they’re great for yard work and keeping your hands really warm. I really liked the elasticated wrist – they were secure, but I could still easily slip them on and off. The reflective panels on the back are a useful feature for hacking and they stood up well to muddy conditions.

Sealskinz Elgin waterproof gloves
RRP
£55.00

Sealskinz Elgin gloves

Windproof and breathable, with a durable synthetic suede palm.

Features velcro closure and waterproof outer

I loved these gloves – they were completely waterproof and super-warm. As they’re a bit bulky, I was concerned I’d struggle to use my fingers for fiddly jobs, but I could still tie up haynets and easily adjust my reins while riding. The lining did start to slip a little, but I think it was because my hands were so warm. I’d recommend them, especially if you suffer from cold hands.

Dublin Everyday Showerproof gloves
RRP
£14.99

Dublin Everyday Showerproof gloves

Showerproof, polar fleece gloves with knitted cuffs and finger reinforcements.

Features water-resistant outer

These gloves were a bit stiff to ride in at first, but this did improve the more I used them. My hands stayed dry in light rain and didn’t get too sweaty on warmer days, but I feel they’re best suited to cooler weather. They were a little thick for undoing rugs and more fiddly yard work such as tying up haynets, but great for walking the dog and other general wear when it was chilly.

Roeckl Westlock gloves
RRP
£74.95

Roeckl Westlock gloves

Softshell gloves that have faux suede palms with silicone grip.

Features Velcro closure, waterproof outer, silicone grip and touchscreen compatible

These gloves were comfortable for riding and yard work, and faultless in terms of grip and freedom of movement. The touchscreen capabilities were fairly reliable and useful if I wanted to take a photo or read a message. My hands were warm without getting sweaty, and stayed dry even when I dunked them in water. They’re durable, practical gloves that protect your hands from the elements.

RRP
£129.95

AA Platinum Lightweight Silicon

Lightweight, flexible breeches made from abrasion-resistant and breathable fabric. They include a zipped thigh pocket.

“I loved these breeches, they’re hugely comfortable and very stylish. The silicone seat had just the right amount of stick and they didn’t restrict my movement in or out of the saddle – they feel like wearing a pair of gym leggings, but are smart enough to wear at competitions. They dried very quickly, so they’re useful if you’re at an event where you need to use them later on or the next day. I’ll definitely be recommending them.”

Equithème Pirouette

Made from breathable stretch fabric, they include a stretch waistband, belt loops, and front pockets.

“I was very impressed with the freedom of movement these breeches offered – the fabric gives no restriction, which made them particularly comfortable for yard duties. I had to choose a size smaller than usual but they were lovely to ride in and I felt secure without being stuck to the saddle. They always came out of the wash looking as good as new.”

Shires Aubrion Taylor full-seat silicone breeches
RRP
£69.99

Aubrion Taylor

High-performance, quick-dry breeches with ribbed knees, jeans style pockets and ankle cuffs.

“They’re comfortable, good quality and the silicone added security to my seat. I cycled to the yard in them easily, but the legs could twist while riding, which made the ribbed knees irritating. However, this improved with wear. While the front pockets are a good size, I’d prefer them to have zips. They looked like new after every wash and were quick to dry.”

John Whitaker Miami full-seat silicone breeches
RRP
£65

John Whitaker Miami

Made from four-way stretch fabric, they’re quick-drying and breathable with a shape-enhancing style.

Featuring zip pockets

“The breeches were really comfortable both in the saddle and for doing jobs around the yard. The silicone was grippy, but I liked that they weren’t so sticky I was stuck in the saddle. They’ve kept their colour during washes, stayed true to size and dried really quickly. Personally, I’d prefer larger pockets to store my valuables, but overall I really liked them.”

Pikeur Lucinda full-seat silicone breeches
RRP
£147.95

Pikeur Lucinda

Stylish, low-rise breeches made from skin-friendly fabric, with a zipped front pocket, logo detailing and ankle cuffs.

Featuring zip pockets and available in long

“I found these breeches very comfortable and stylish, although the sizing came up small. The design is simple but smart, and the grip kept me secure in the saddle without gluing me in place. The zip pocket was handy for storing valuables, but I would have preferred it to be a bit bigger. I liked the elastic ankle cuffs, which made it easy to zip up my long boots. Overall, they performed well and I’d recommend them if you’re looking to treat yourself.”

Cavallo Pro Grip full-seat silicone breeches
RRP
£159

Cavallo Pro Grip

Made from hardwearing, quick-dry, breathable fabric, they have slit front pockets and Swarovski stone detailing.

Featuring sparkle detail

“These breeches were comfortable – and dirt-repellent – enough to wear for days on end, and so flattering that I was happy to wear them away from the yard. I felt really secure in the saddle and was able to move freely, although they came up a little small compared to other pairs. The fabric survived brambles and thorn bushes unscathed, held up well in rain showers and dried quickly. Despite lots of wear and washes, they still look as good as new.”

The sole was comfortable from the start, with a good grip, and I didn’t need a wearing-in period. They cleaned up easily and are completely waterproof. They are quite tall – I am 5ft 7in and felt the fit would be better if they were a few centimetres shorter in the leg.”

“These boots were very comfortable to wear and didn’t rub my feet at all. I mainly used them on the yard and for walking my dogs in the rain, as they had good grip in the wet. They’re pretty stylish for wellingtons, so I was happy to wear them if I needed to pop into town after being at the yard – after giving them a quick wash down with the hose they looked as good as new. They are made of good-quality materials, so they are brilliant value for money. Personally, I loved the electric blue colour, but it might not be the first choice for everyone.”

Just Togs Monterey boots

Leather upper, waterproof, breathable lining, comfort support insole, steel shank and anti-skid rubber sole

Sizes: 4–8

“I love these boots. They look stylish and are incredibly comfortable with no wearing-in required. I wore them on muddy, wet walks, and they had really good grip and kept my feet dry. The lining worked well and stopped my feet from getting too hot. They cleaned up well and without too much effort. I found them a bit loose round the ankle for riding, but they were fine for general hacking. Overall, I thought they were great boots and extremely good value for money. They came up a little big, but it wasn’t too much of a problem.”

RRP
£134.99

Shires Charbury boots

“I thought the boots were true to size, and the footbed was very comfy and felt supportive. They’re completely waterproof, still look smart, are easy to wipe clean and the lining is still in place. Because they’re not tight around the foot or ankle, I only used them for leisurely hacking, but they’re great to wear around the yard. Overall, I think they’re a great yard boot, but I found them difficult to break in. The heel and ankle rubbed, and they were quite rigid around the calf. However, the leather has softened and I’m glad I persevered with them as they’re now extremely comfy!”

Weatherproof, breathable fabric lining, cushioned insoles, rubber stirrup-safe grip soles and tie tops

Sizes: 35–45, standard or wide

RRP
£140

Bogs Alexandria boots

Four-way stretch inner bootie, DuraFresh lining, soft leather footbed with shock-absorbing cushion and slip-resistant rubber outsole

Sizes: 38–45 with half sizes

“The boots were true to size and very comfy from day one. Because of the zip and handles, they’re very easy to pull on and off. I was pleased that they kept my feet dry on rainy days, but they aren’t totally waterproof because of the zip. They were fantastic for yard work, had good grip in the mud and kept my feet comfortable all day. In warmer weather, I found them to be breathable. I also really like that they’re smart enough to wear away from the yard. I wasn’t sure about the style to begin with, but the comfort and quality is excellent.”

RRP
£110

Brogini Ruscello boots

An adjustable front drawstring, waterproof membrane, combination of grain leather and nubuck

Sizes: 36–43, standard–X wide

“They were true to size and comfortable to wear right from the start. I really liked the style and design, too – they looked smart and stylish, so I was able to wear them at the yard and for horsey days out. The waterproof membrane goes up to the mid-calf and my feet didn’t get wet in spite of being caught in downpours. They’ve worn really well, I’ve walked miles in them and the lining has remained intact. It’s easy to wash them off if they get muddy and I also used them for riding, as they have a chunky rubber sole with a heel. They got a bit sweaty in warmer weather, but they aren’t really designed for warm weather riding.”

RRP
£79.95

Noble Outfitters women’s Stay Cool High Muds

Waterproof, shock-absorbing, antimicrobial insole, breathable, moisture-wicking mesh lining and anti-slip sole

Sizes: 3.5–8.5

“The boots were true to size, and I was particularly pleased that they come in half sizes. They took a little getting used to as they’re quite robust, so feel heavier than other boots. The grip was fantastic on muddy walks and around the yard. They’ve worn well, with no slouching, and after a clean look as good as new. They’re neoprene-lined so are lovely on cold days, and kept my feet warm and dry, although on warmer days, even though they are moisture-wicking, I found them a bit too hot. They’re functional and do their job well, but didn’t feel very stylish.”

RRP
£329.99

Ariat Braemar GTX boots

Waterproof leather upper with a waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex lining, shock absorbing midsole and Duratread outsole

Colours: Chestnut or ebony brown

Sizes 3–8.5

“The boots were very comfy, and I was happy to wear them for hours. I’ve worn them through downpours and walking around wet fields, and they were absolutely waterproof. They would be good for yard work, but they’re so nice that I have kept them for walks and horsey days out. They are expensive, but because of the top quality materials and technology they feel like a reasonable buy – especially as they look like they will last for years. It would be good to have the option of different calf fittings. The drawstring tightens them, but people with slimmer calves possibly wouldn’t get the look they were after.”

RRP
£159.99

Dublin Pinnacle boots

Waterproof and breathable with lace adjustment. Leather upper, heel and arch supports, and double cushioning layer

Size: 36–43

“These boots were true to size and a good fit. I especially liked the lacing down the side, which allowed for a larger calf and still looked stylish. They were comfortable right from the start and I had no rubs or blisters at all. I used them mainly for yard work, walking and light hacking. They are completely waterproof and, despite getting covered in mud, brushed up really well and looked good as new. They have a sweat control lining, which worked well and kept my feet from getting too hot. Because of the good design and comfort, I felt they were good value for money. I found that the grip wasn’t quite as good on very muddy ground, but on sand and firmer ground they were great.”

RRP
£50.00

Harry Hall Frost ladies winter boots

Neoprene leg, fleece-lined foot, reinforced inside leg, reflective detail, dirt- and water-resistant coating to upper

Sizes 3–8

“The boots didn’t need any breaking in and were comfy immediately. The zip was easy to do up and I liked the reflective piping. I get really cold feet in the winter, but the fleecy lining in the foot and the neoprene leg kept me warm and cosy. The rubber part was easy to clean, and the sole was nice and grippy on the yard and in the mud. They were comfortable to ride in, too, and the reinforced panel on the inside to protect the neoprene worked well. Although the appearance isn’t to my taste, in terms of comfort and performance they are excellent value for money. The neoprene part was hard to clean, especially when removing the grease from my horse’s coat.”

RRP
£89.50

Rhinegold Elite Vermont boots

Waxy leather outer and waterproof, breathable membrane, faux suede lining and elasticated vent with drawstring

Sizes: 36–42, normal or wide

“The boots were true to size and really comfy from day one. I’ve worn them on walks, on the yard and in all weather conditions, and they have kept my feet dry and comfortable. They’ve held their shape well and I was pleased that they haven’t slouched too much. Personally, I wouldn’t ride in them because of the ridged sole, but they are good for yard work and stylish enough to be worn for smarter country days out. I found that the inner soles tended to come out when I took them off and although I like the lace drawstring feature, it’s very thin and the bow slips undone.”

RRP
£118.99

Horze Rovigo tall boots

Waterproof, lined nubuck leather, double Velcro closure at the calf, durable sole and defined heel for riding

Sizes: 35–42

“I found these boots came up quite big. However, I liked that in colder weather I could wear thick socks without them being too tight. I get very cold feet, so I really liked that they had a fleece lining. They were comfortable from the start and are totally waterproof. I even wore them wading through a river and had no problems with wet feet. They have a good heel for riding, but I found the foot a bit chunky for my stirrups. The sole was tough and they had good grip in the mud. I found they were quite wide around the calf, so I had to close the straps as tight as possible for a good fit. They also slouched down a bit more than I would expect.”

RRP
£109.95

Horka York outdoor boots

Waterproof lined (except for zipper), outer calf leather and suede, mesh lining and an anti-slip rubber sole

Sizes: 36–46

“These boots were true to size and fitted really well. There was no need to break them in, as they were very comfortable from the first wear. I washed my car, walked my dog through wet, muddy fields and bathed my horse in them, and impressively my feet stayed perfectly dry. The thick tread was great for walking through muddy fields and they were breathable, so no hot, sweaty feet. I’ve worn them nearly every day and they’re still as good as new. I wouldn’t change anything. I love the style, height of the boot and how comfortable they are.”

RRP
£89.99

Mark Todd adjustable

Waterproof and breathable lining, grip sole and adjustable calf

Sizes: 37–42

“The boots came up quite big, so I had to wear them with thick socks. The sole is really comfortable and cushioned, which made them great for long days. I used them mainly for yard work and walking. My feet stayed dry in the rain and didn’t get too hot on warmer days. They’ve got good, grippy soles, so are great for walking in muddy fields. They have slouched down a little bit, but this hasn’t made them any less comfortable. They still look smart, too, as the dark brown colour has stopped them from looking grubby. They rubbed a bit to start with as the seam at the ankle is quite hard, although this has softened with wear. It was important to keep the touch tape fastenings free from dirt, so they keep working well.”

RRP
£160

Toggi Caledon boots

Waterproof and breathable, all-terrain thermo rubber sole, removable foot bed.

Sizes: 36–43

“The boots were true to size and a good fit. They were a little bit stiff in the leg to start with, but softened quickly and haven’t rubbed or caused any problems. They are waterproof – I’ve hosed them off lots of times after walking through muddy fields and never had wet feet. I like that they are smart enough and comfy enough for outdoor days out. They are quite expensive, but have a good sole for grip and comfort, and haven’t slouched, either, so I feel they’re an investment that is worth the cost. I wouldn’t have chosen a mid-length boot, but I actually found that they were more versatile and looked smarter than I expected.”

RRP
£95.99

Tuffa Fjord boots

Waterproof and breathable membranes, waxed nubuck leather, rubber riding soles

Sizes: 4–12

“These boots were comfy to wear and true to size. They look smart, and the elastic inserts make them easy to get on and off. They’re waterproof, which makes them a great yard boot. They didn’t make my feet too hot when the weather was warm, but they also didn’t keep my feet that warm on really cold days, so I think they’re better as a spring or summer boot. They brushed up well once I’d left them to dry and I could wear them with my chaps to use them for riding. They’re quite chunky, so I didn’t like to use them for riding, even though they’re designed for this purpose as well as being a yard boot.”

RRP
£94.90

Equi-Thème Dermo Dry with laces

ScotchGard protection against rain and stains, antibacterial, absorbent liner, rigid and anti-skid sole

Sizes: 36–44

“I found the boots came up quite big and I could comfortably wear thick socks on cold days. On really cold days they didn’t keep my feet that warm, but on warmer days my feet didn’t get hot, so they make good summer boots. I’ve worn them for lots of long days of walking, and they’ve kept my feet nice and comfortable. Despite all the wear, they still look smart and clean up easily. They’ve been great for yard work – the grippy sole worked really well in the mud and I love how supportive they are. I found that the panel behind the laces designed to keep the water out didn’t work particularly well, but the rest of the boot was totally waterproof.”

RRP
£90.00

Woof Wear Horizon boots

Waterproof nubuck leather upper, breathable internal waterproof membrane, multilayered insole, canvas ankle guard, sole suitable for riding and walking.

Colours: Black or chestnut
Sizes: 37–42

“I really liked that they were comfy from first wear and I’ve had no rubs or blisters, and no issues with wet feet, either. They’ve worn really well, the quality is good and they seem to be built to last. I really like how breathable they are – my feet didn’t sweat in them at all, and I liked the option of having a shorter boot that still offered good support and protection. Although you can ride in these boots, I found them quite chunky and mainly used them as a yard boot. I found they came up quite big, so I ended up with a size smaller than usual. I also found them quite heavy, but generally really liked them.”

RRP
£28.00

Swegmark Courage extreme support sports bra

Fit details: Back hook-and-eye fastenings, ring with hook for racer back option, padded shoulder straps and moulded double layers in front

Worn for: General riding and yard work

Colours: Black, black/raspberry, black/turquoise or black/white

“I really liked this bra. It felt comfortable and I thought it was true to size. It has washed really well, it’s still just as supportive and is still bright pink. I don’t think I would change anything – even though the five fastenings were a bit tricky to do up, they made the bra very supportive. The shape is good and the wider band underneath is flattering. I liked the pink, but it’s very bright so might not be everyone’s cup of tea.”

RRP
£29.90

Purelime high-impact support bra

Fit details: Back hook-and-eye fastenings, padded straps and seam-free cups

Worn for: Running and general riding

Colours: Black or white

Cup sizes: A–E

Back sizes: 32–38in

“It was a really good fit and very comfortable. I’ve worn it running and riding several times a week, and it’s still just as supportive. The material still looks white and hasn’t deteriorated. Some other sports bras make my back ache after exercise, but this one did a great job and I would definitely buy another one. It’s the best sports bra I’ve ever had. I would love another in a more fun colour or interesting print, because when wearing it under a strappy top the thick, white straps aren’t that attractive.”

RRP
£25.00

M&S breathable, high-impact, underwired padded sports bra

Fit details: Cross-back with hook-and-eye fastenings and seam-free padded cups

Worn for: General riding and jumping, running and Pilates

Cup sizes: B–DD

Back sizes: 32–38in

“I thought the fit and support of this bra was excellent. It hasn’t faded or bobbled in the wash, and although I thought the width of the band around my chest would mean it would crease, this hasn’t happened. The colour and design meant I didn’t mind it being visible under sports tops, and the racer back means no slipping straps or digging in, and it really distributed pressure to minimise marks left behind by the straps. It’s not particularly easy to get into, but even with a shoulder injury I managed fine.”

RRP
£29.00

Hells Bells sports bra

Fit details: Over the head racer back, with a double-layered, seamed front and wide band round the ribs

Worn for: Hacking, flatwork, jumping, running and tennis

Colours: Wide variety

Cup sizes: A–HH

Back sizes: XS–XL

“There were no fastenings for this bra, so I was apprehensive about how easy it would be to put on and take off, but it was stretchy enough not to be a problem. It fitted well and I liked the shape it gave. I liked that it was really supportive, but still comfortable enough to wear all day. Perhaps a more breathable fabric would be beneficial for summer days, as it was quite thick.”

Royce sports bra
RRP
£22

Royce Lingerie Impact Free Petite sports bra

Fit details: Over the head, with two extra hook-and-eye fastenings, racer back design and removable padding in cups

Worn for: General riding, running and the gym

Cup sizes: A–D

Back sizes: 30–36in

“I found this bra to be extremely comfortable. The material was soft and very supportive, and it didn’t deteriorate in the wash. It was a nice fit and I liked the shape that it gave. I would rather not have removable padding in the cups, as they tended to fold over in the wash and were fiddly to straighten out. Without them the bra felt less supportive and wasn’t quite as comfortable. “

Lynx Sports Bras
RRP
£41.82

Lynx cross-back sports bra

Fit details: Over the head cross-back, with adjustable keyhole strap, soft seams and cups with mesh panels

Worn for: Zumba and general riding

Colours: Black, black/white, full bloom, lilac, blue, magenta, mercury, granite, plaid, nebula or jade

Cup sizes: DD–J

Back sizes: 32–44in

“I really like the look of this bra. The cross-back is stylish, and the pattern is funky and fashionable. It was supportive but, having a large chest, I probably wouldn’t use it for very high-impact sports. I found the sizing was quite generous round the back. It’s also quite high at the front, so does show under some tops.”

Felix Buhler sports bra
RRP
£19.90

Felix Bühler High Action Extreme sports bra

Fit details: Back hook-and-eye fastenings, seam-free cups, mesh inserts and wide, padded shoulder straps

Worn for: Gym classes and general riding

Colours: Black or white

Cup sizes: B–E

Back sizes: 34–40in

“I loved the feel of the bra. The straps were a nice width and padded, so ideal for riding, and I almost forgot I had it on because it was so comfortable. It gave a very natural shape and washed well. I found it to be very supportive and I liked the cut. The material over the cups wasn’t very thick.”

Panache sports bra
RRP
£40.00

Panache Sport wired sports bra

Fit details: Back hook-and-eye fastenings, racer back option, wide, padded straps and seamless inner cups

Worn for: General riding and the gym

Colours: Black, white, grey, odessey print or neon pixel print

Cup sizes: B–J

Back sizes: 28–40in

“It was pretty comfy in general, with a good fit. I liked the thick band at the bottom and the straps were comfy. It washed well and the material didn’t deteriorate at all. It was quite supportive and even better when I used the racer back option. The clasp for this was easy to use and felt secure. I didn’t really like the shape that it gave and, having a large chest, I didn’t feel that it gave me enough support for higher impact sports, but for general riding it was fine.”

Berlei Crop Top
RRP
£38.00

Berlei Ultimate Performance crop top

Fit details: Back hook-and-eye fastenings, seamless cups and straps can be cross-over, racer back or straight

Worn for: Dressage, sponsored rides, cross-country, dog walking and the gym

Colours: Black

Cup sizes: C–E

Back sizes: 32–40in

“The fit was quite tight, especially under my arms, but once it had been worn a few times and washed, it softened really well. It has washed quite well, the material still looks good and it’s still just as supportive. It’s a classic style with a flattering fit that I liked very much. I found that the clip on the back to pull the straps together took a bit of getting used to and it came undone a couple of times while I was riding. It’s quite difficult to make sure it’s done up properly.”

Anita Active Momentum Sports Bra
RRP
£50.00

Anita Active Momentum sports bra

Fit details: Back hook-and-eye fastenings, wide padded straps, flat seams and seamless cups

Worn for: Jogging and general riding

Colours: Black, white or skin

“The fit and design are good, with substantial and  comfortable shoulder straps. Being chesty, I find it difficult to find a sports bra that provides adequate support, but I was really impressed at how supportive it was, and it washed well. The only thing I’d change is the elastic that goes around your chest. It’s thin and the edge is quite scratchy, so it irritated my skin a bit. If it had a thicker, softer elastic here, it would be perfect.”

Fine, leather-backed gloves with stretch inserts at the knuckles and between the fingers. Synthetic grip palms with touch-sensitive synthetic suede fingers for rein control. Elasticated wrists with touch-and-close fastenings.

“These gloves were smart enough to use for both casual riding and at competitions. They fitted well, with stretchy material on the back of the hand for comfort when riding and reinforced material where the reins sit for durability. They washed well and feel like they will really last.  Although great for riding, they weren’t the warmest of gloves for general use around the yard and they lost some of their grip when wet.”

RRP
£15.99

Shires Super Cool competition gloves

A lightweight leather glove with a mesh back to keep hands cool. They also feature reinforced grips and adjustable wrists.

“They were very comfortable with a stretchy mesh patch across the knuckles, which provided unrestricted hand movement. They look smart for competitions with a strong fastening. The fingers seemed very long for a average person’s hand shape and finger length. Could be cold when worn in cold weather because of the mesh patch.”

“I love these gloves! When you’re wearing both layers they are toasty warm and not too thick so you can still do a lot of things with them on. The lining is really soft and warm, too. I also found the wrist strap handy as you don’t have to find somewhere to put them when you take them off for a minute. They are great value for money as you have gloves to suit all kinds of weather and jobs. If you’re wearing both pairs you have to take them off and put them on separately.”

“I loved these breeches, they looked great and were comfortable. The full seat fitted well and I thought they were good value for money. Despite following the washing instructions to the letter, the stains wouldn’t come out unless I soaked them first.”

“I really like the fabric of these breeches. They feel really well made and washed very well. However, I found the seams at the bottom of the full seat to be uncomfortable on long show days.”

Tredstep Azzura Pro knee patch breeches

The articulated knee patch has an integrated silicone design for grip and added flexibility.

“They’re stylish and comfortable, and I really liked the detail around the waistband, which is wide and doesn’t pinch. I tested the white breeches and they were very transparent, so I had to choose my underwear particularly carefully.”

RRP
£88.99

British Showjumping Stoneleigh breeches

Strong fabric which is comfortable and hard-wearing. Features a stitched seat and rubber knee patches for grip.

“They gave good grip and were very comfortable. The knee patches looked similar to much more expensive styles, which I liked. They are very see-through, which made me really self-conscious, but they were fine with tights underneath.”

£87.99

Mark Todd Contender breeches

Breathable, water- and wind-resistant performance fabric. Four-way stretch material and streamlined ankle sock.

Tel: 01303 872277 wefi.co.uk

RRP
£80

Toggi Gatcombe full-seat breeches

Soft feel and super stretchy for ease of movement. The fabric contains a built-in moisture management system.

Tel: 01132 707000 toggi.com

“The thicker material around the seat was great at protecting my modesty. They didn’t stain, which was really great. I wasn’t keen on the Velcro bottom, but the fabric was thin so it fitted in my boots with no problem.”

Aztec Diamond Equestrian white technical breeches

Technical breeches lined in soft-touch Lycra material, with wicking and cooling technologies.

Tel: 01388 764656 aztecdiamond.com

“I loved the black detail, the sticky knees in contrasting black and that the lower leg was material, not Velcro. The larger belt loops meant I could wear a decent belt. I especially liked the pockets on the bottom as my phone fitted in them. They washed and fitted very well. The material is very light so I’d recommend for summer wear.”

RRP
£78.50

Equetech Shield breeches

“The grippy knees were fab and I love the baby pink detailing. The material stretched a little around the knee, but I did wear them a lot because I love them.”

Tel: 01922 642222 ejeffries.co.uk

“The fabric is really good quality and the seat fitted nicely. I felt they were a great price for the quality and made my legs look really toned. I nearly put my foot through the mesh section at the lower part of the leg, but it did reduce bulk inside my boots.”

RRP

“The material was really tough and the waistband was comfortable. They also washed really well. The ankles were a bit baggy. It would be better if the stretchy fabric went all the way round the leg.”

Tel: 0203 0966150 decathlon.co.uk

Harry Hall Chester sticky bum breeches

Traditional, lightweight breeches with zip front and hook-and-bar fastening. They feature a dressage seat in a sticky bum fabric.

Tel: 01274 711048 harryhall.co.uk

“I’m average height and I didn’t have to roll the bottoms up, which I have had to with other breeches. The material is comfy. The material takes quite a long time to dry if it gets wet and they’re quite an unusual shade of beige.”

RRP
£39.99

Fouganza blouson coat

Buy if you want a versatile jacket.

“I loved the style with matching jersey ribbed knit at the waist and cuffs. It fitted nicely and was comfortable. I like that it’s not too bulky, so I don’t get hot while riding. The hood needs to be slightly bigger, as it slips back off my head. The fabric at the wrists and waist gets quite wet, but the jacket keeps me dry.”

RRP
£44

Felix Bühler Functional Spirit coat

A remarkable price for a reliable waterproof.

“I really like the material – it doesn’t let the rain soak in, so never feels damp or heavy. I like the adjustable wrists, too. The inside zip pocket is really useful for carrying your keys, mobile and wallet without the worry you’ll lose them. The hood is far too big. I have to pull the cords very tight to gather it in, but even this isn’t enough to make it fit snugly.”

RRP
£50.99

Horze Supreme Lianna Club coat

A yard jacket for all seasons.

“I like this jacket a lot. It’s warm but not bulky, allowing for layers to be worn underneath. It’s extremely good in wet weather and the fabric is ideal for the yard.  In my opinion, the thumb loop cuffs are a bit of a pain when riding and working on the yard because they get grubby quite quickly.”

RRP
£54.95

Bridleway Yukon coat

Lightweight rain protection without breaking the bank.

“The length is perfect, offering head-to-toe protection while not being too heavy. It dries quickly, too, and the price is unbeatable. It’s lightweight, easy to move in and really warm. I love it!”

RRP
£79.99

Shires Team Field jacket

Ideal if you want a simple, but practical yard coat.

“I wore this jacket hacking in horrid weather and remained bone dry in it. The pockets are large, secure and waterproof. I find the style practical, but a little plain, and the articulated sleeves didn’t seem to do anything.”

RRP
£87.95

Horseware Brianna coat

Ideal for light rain and layering.

“I liked that the sleeves were a little on the long side so when my arms were bent while riding, my wrists still got good coverage. It was really snug around my neck, which is great for keeping out draughts and light rain. The fabric is good for a water-resistant jacket. The opening to the pockets is quite tight but at least things didn’t fall out.”

RRP
£94.99

Jack Murphy Abbeyville coat

Great for wearing to the pub or the yard.

“I love the shape and it’s easy to wear thicker jumpers underneath. It’s also a good length for riding, keeping the rain out very well. There’s a lovely fleece lining in the body of the jacket and in the pockets, but I was really disappointed that the sleeves weren’t lined and it meant my wrists got wet. The fabric picks up dust easily, but looked really smart when it was clean.”

RRP
£95

Just Togs Vermont coat

If you like a bit of bling, even in miserable weather.

“I like the shape and the silver detail against the charcoal. The zip tags are a good size to use even when wearing gloves. It washes well, dries quickly and shavings don’t stick to it. In heavy rain, the inside of the pockets got a little bit wet.”

RRP
£109.95

Horka Outdoor Canyon coat

If you like a slightly longer coat that stands up to yard life well.

“I really like that it’s not too heavy, but it’s still warm. I don’t heat up while riding in it. I also really like the adjustable waist cord so the jacket has some shape to it and is flattering. I would prefer adjustable wrists so that water doesn’t run up the sleeve when washing my horse off.”

RRP
£99

Townend Tie Performance coat

Perfect to be layered with a gilet.

“I love the extended neoprene-type cuff because it stopped water running up the sleeve when washing my horse. The material is really waterproof and doesn’t show any stable dirt. I prefer a fitted shape.”

RRP
£119.90

Equi-Thème King coat

Perfect for the yard fashionista!

“The jacket is 100% waterproof, very comfortable and keeps me warm. I love the size of the pockets, and that it’s not too big and bulky for riding in. The high collar is really nice. I would have preferred a jacket with a hood and I would have liked to see a few more technical features for the money.”

RRP
£130

Toggi Clementine coat

Perfect if you prefer a longer length jacket.

“This jacket is easy to move in and a good fit. The extra length is brilliant, especially when washing buckets or filling haynets, because it doesn’t leave your back exposed. The sleeves are thinner than the rest of the coat, so in cold weather a jumper is a must.”

RRP
£149

PK Grafiek coat

Keep warm and dry in this stylish number.

“I like the high collar because it kept my hair dry when I had my riding hat on, and the outside breast pocket was easier to get my phone from than inside the jacket. It was really warm and dry. I thought it came up a little small in size and I did manage to pull off a zip tag, but the zip remained intact.”

RRP
£149.99

Ariat Burney coat

For those needing a smart and functional yard coat.

“I really like the fit and the drawstring waist. The zip pockets are secure and roomy. I also like that it is lightweight, so it keeps me dry but not too hot when schooling. The hood is big, so it doesn’t stay up when it’s windy.”

RRP
£159.95

Evolution Insulated coat

You want to look stylish and remain bone dry.

“I bathed my horse and got the jacket completely drenched, but no water ran up the sleeves and the fabric remained watertight. It’s stylish and the quality is fab. I was surprised to find that the zipper is on the right, not the left, which is unusual for a woman’s jacket and took a while to get used to.”

RRP
£161.95

HV Polo Heather coat

Perfect for when the temperature drops.

“The two-way pockets are brilliant, and keep your hands warm and your items separate. I really love the look and style, too. I think it’s exceptionally good value for money. The material is really durable and smart. The vented bottom means that it’s comfortable in the saddle. The thick material makes it quite heavy to ride in.”

RRP
£169.95

Baleno Kensington coat

Stay dry and elegant from head to toe.

“It’s a really smart, elegant coat. The fabric was soft, not rustly like most long waterproof coats, which was great as my horse is a youngster so I was worried about it upsetting him. I wish the outer pockets zipped up – they have a single popper, which made me feel hesitant about putting anything valuable in them when out riding.”

RRP
£169.95

Mountain Horse Windsor coat

A well-designed, quality riding jacket.

“The fit is sublime. It’s tapered at the back so it’s flattering and is comfy to ride in. The high collar kept my neck warm and dry. It’s easy to get confused and try to open the zip to the pocket rather than the main zip, as they’re located next to each other.”

RRP
£175

Cavallo Faye coat

Perfect for wrapping up against the cold weather.

“It’s really warm and comfortable with lots of fill, but still feels light. It’s great for dog walking, too, as it has so many pockets. The material is resilient and effective for yard jobs. Hay gets stuck to the fleecy cuffs and, unless you tuck them away, they get wet.”

RRP
£199.96

Pikeur Salima

If you like to layer, this jacket is ideal.

“I like the style of this jacket, especially the detailing on the sleeves and the warm collar. The fabric is lightweight and breathable, and the fit is perfect. I would have preferred it to be longer.”
