We’re halfway through the first round of the Olympic team dressage event and Team GB is lying in silver medal position overnight.

But how will the medals be decided? We’ve got the lowdown…

  • All three riders from each team take part in the Grand Prix. They’re split into six groups, with three competing on each of the two days of Grand Prix competition.
  • The horse and riders pairs are split into groups based on the FEI World Ranking list position of the horse.
  • The top 10 teams (and any teams tied for 10th place) after the first two days go forward to the Grand Prix Special, which is how the team medals are decided.
  • The top 18 combinations (two from each of the three groups from the Grand Prix, and then the next six highest scoring combinations) from the Grand Prix Special qualify for the individual medal decider, which is the Grand Prix Freestyle to music.
