Horse owners and riders in Scotland now have access to new education and training opportunities, thanks to a partnership between British Dressage (BD) and the Scottish Racing Academy (SRA). The collaboration sees the BD Apprenticeship programme extended to Scotland, offering vocational qualifications to those aged 16 and over who live and work in the country.

Previously available only in England through Sport Structures, the BD Apprenticeship is now accessible to Scottish learners, with the SRA taking on the role of training provider. From January, students in Scotland will be able to enrol in the Generic Horse Care Modern Apprenticeship, which incorporates a dressage-specific pathway. The programme offers a structured way to develop equestrian skills while gaining hands-on experience in the workplace.

Charlotte Osborne, British Dressage Training & Education Manager, welcomed the expansion, saying: “We’re committed to providing an inclusive, accessible route into equestrian sport – unlocking these opportunities in Scotland and Wales is the next step to achieving this goal.”

The BD Apprenticeship is designed with dressage at its core, but the training is open to anyone with a passion for horse care, welfare, and sport. Both BD and SRA share a commitment to improving accessibility in the equestrian industry, particularly for those without traditional connections to the sport.

Throughout their studies, apprentices will benefit from expert support from the SRA team and BD Professional Programmes Officer Clare Stockley. Learners will gain practical experience while working towards recognised qualifications, giving them a solid foundation for a career in the industry.

Fiona Rawson, Chief Executive of the Scottish Racing Academy, highlighted the significance of the initiative: “Being able to provide the qualification for the dressage community opens the door to provide more opportunities for the young and developing workforce.”

This partnership marks a key step in improving access to equestrian training across the UK, helping to develop the next generation of skilled riders and equestrian professionals.
