Courtney King-Dye in Coma After Fall from Dressage Horse

Posted in News

US Olympic Dressage rider Courtney King-Dye remains in a coma after falling from a horse while not wearing a hat.

The accident, which took place during a training session in Florida last Thursday, has left King-Dye in a coma. It was reported that the horse fell on top of the 32-year-old after tripping with its hind legs and tipping over sideways. King-Dye was not wearing a helmet at the time.

An air ambulance took the rider to a West Palm Beach medical centre, where she remains in a coma in intensive care. Neurologists are unsure when King-Dye will come out of her coma.

“Courtney’s accident reminds us all how vulnerable we are around horses,” said Grand Prix dressage rider Heather Blitz. “Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Courtney and her family as she faces this medical challenge, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery.”

The accident appeared to prompt an increase in the number of people wearing helmets at last week’s Palm Beach Derby in Florida, where King-Dye was due to compete.
