A nail-biting end to the Olympic eventing saw Laura Collett take individual bronze, with Christopher Burton in silver and Michael Jung taking gold

It was a well-deserved gold medal win for Germany’s Michael Jung who jumped a fantastic clear round with the 16-year-old gelding Chipmunk FRH. Last to go, Michael kept his cool under pressure after Brits Tom McEwen and Laura Collett and the USA’s Christopher Burton all posted clears before him.

An ecstatic Laura Collett punched the air as she piloted London 52 to a clear inside the time. Having had a fence down in the morning competition, the rider put that moment behind her to finish the competition with a super clear round. Being interviewed after her round, an emotional Laura said: “I owe absolutely everything to this horse. The team at home have all made it possible for me just to compete here and I’m so lucky to be the one who gets to ride in an arena like that and come out with a team gold and individual bronze medal. There are so many people to thank.”

Just outside the medal placings, finishing in a very respectable fourth place, was Tom McEwen riding Nicola Wilson’s former partner JL Dublin. Tom didn’t clock up a single jumping penalty throughout the whole competition, leaving him on his dressage score of 25.80.

A clear round this afternoon was never going to be enough to put Rosalind Canter in individual medal contention, after the rider received 15 penalties for missing a flag during yesterday’s cross-country. However, the World number one completed her first Olympics with a smashing clear round aboard the 17hh gelding Lordships Graffalo (Walter). Rosalind said: “I’m delighted with my round. Walter’s only 12 and we’re still learning things about him. I made a couple of tweaks from this morning’s round and dropped his bit back to just a plain snaffle this afternoon because he was quite ecstatic about the atmosphere and when he gets excited, he drops the contact. That made all the difference.”

The final individual medal placings are…

Gold – Michael Jung

Silver – Christopher Burton

Bronze – Laura Collett

Tomorrow sees the start of the dressage competition with the first rider at 10am British time.
