There’s something special about the combination of intelligence, bravery, and an unmistakable touch of Emerald Isle magic about Ireland’s native breeds, and its record for breeding sport horses is outstanding. A rich heritage

From the warhorses of Celtic warriors to the hardworking farm horses that shaped rural life, Ireland has a deep-rooted tradition of breeding hardy, intelligent, and athletic horses.

Today, Ireland is one of the world’s leading producers of competition horses, with many of the best showjumpers and eventers boasting Irish bloodlines. With its high rainfall and mild climate, resulting in excellent grazing for livestock, and combined with generations of careful breeding and horsemanship knowledge passed down through families who live and breathe horses, it’s no wonder Ireland produces horses with exceptional soundness, stamina, and heart.

Irish breeds: a class of their own

Irish Sport Horse

Okay – so this isn’t technically a pure breed. However, Irish Sport Horses (ISHs) are in demand across the world, and for good reason. Traditionally a combination of Irish Draught and Thoroughbred blood, they combine the best qualities of both breeds. The mix results in a horse who’s athletic yet tough and sure-footed, making them excellent competition horses, as well as brilliant all-rounders.

  • Temperament: Brave, intelligent, and eager to please.

ISHs are renowned for their careful, bold jump. However, with their hardy Irish Draught heritage, they’re also tough and resilient, and renowned for being sure-footed and level-headed. Today, many ISHs include Warmblood breeding lines, as the drive towards increased athletic ability for high-level sports has impacted breeding, but there are still plenty of traditionally bred horses around.

Irish Draught

A national treasure, the Irish Draught is known for its strength, versatility, and kind temperament. Originally bred as a farm horse, they were capable of ploughing fields as well as taking the farmer hunting – although today the breed has evolved into a popular choice for competition and leisure riding.

  • Temperament: Sensible, trainable, and friendly.

Although traditionally a heavier build, modern Irish Draughts tend to be lighter and more refined, making them a fantastic choice for riders who want a safe, sensible horse.

Connemara

Native to the wild landscapes of western Ireland, the Connemara pony is tough and versatile, loved for its intelligence and ability. And while they might be smaller than some of their counterparts, this Irish pony breed excels in everything from Pony Club activities to high-level eventing and dressage.

  • Temperament: Clever, hardy, and willing.

Connemaras have an incredible ability to form strong bonds with their riders, making them ideal for children and adults. In many ways they’re like small horses and, as such, make perfect parent/child shares. With their stamina and agility, they’re a firm favourite in competitive circles and leisure riding, and many people prize a Connemara/TB cross above all others as a perfect amateur’s competition horse.

 Kerry Bog Pony

One of Ireland’s rarest native breeds, the Kerry Bog pony stands just 10–12hh and is sturdy, sure-footed and extremely strong, having been bred to haul heavy loads of peat.

  • Temperament: Gentle, intelligent, and easy to handle.

By 1994 there were just 30 or so Kerry Bog Ponies remaining in Ireland. Concerted effort, alongside genetic testing to reduce in-breeding means that today the population is around 500, with 50 foals being registered each year.

Why are Irish horses so special?

Irish horses are renowned for their combination of bravery, intelligence, and athleticism. Thanks to their tough upbringings on Ireland’s often challenging terrain, they develop exceptional balance and sure-footedness from a young age. This natural ability, combined with careful breeding, makes them a top choice for riders worldwide.

And while many professional riders seek out Irish horses not only for their talent but also for their work ethic, they make the perfect companion for riders of every level and ambition. So, whether you’re planning to tackle a cross-country course, soar over showjumps, or head out for a long hack, what better companion could you ask for?
