Irish Sport Horse

Okay – so this isn’t technically a pure breed. However, Irish Sport Horses (ISHs) are in demand across the world, and for good reason. Traditionally a combination of Irish Draught and Thoroughbred blood, they combine the best qualities of both breeds. The mix results in a horse who’s athletic yet tough and sure-footed, making them excellent competition horses, as well as brilliant all-rounders.

• Temperament: Brave, intelligent, and eager to please.

ISHs are renowned for their careful, bold jump. However, with their hardy Irish Draught heritage, they’re also tough and resilient, and renowned for being sure-footed and level-headed. Today, many ISHs include Warmblood breeding lines, as the drive towards increased athletic ability for high-level sports has impacted breeding, but there are still plenty of traditionally bred horses around.

Irish Draught

A national treasure, the Irish Draught is known for its strength, versatility, and kind temperament. Originally bred as a farm horse, they were capable of ploughing fields as well as taking the farmer hunting – although today the breed has evolved into a popular choice for competition and leisure riding.

Although traditionally a heavier build, modern Irish Draughts tend to be lighter and more refined, making them a fantastic choice for riders who want a safe, sensible horse.

Connemara

Native to the wild landscapes of western Ireland, the Connemara pony is tough and versatile, loved for its intelligence and ability.  Kerry Bog Pony

One of Ireland’s rarest native breeds, the Kerry Bog pony stands just 10–12hh and is sturdy, sure-footed and extremely strong, having been bred to haul heavy loads of peat.

• Temperament: Gentle, intelligent, and easy to handle.

By 1994 there were just 30 or so Kerry Bog Ponies remaining in Ireland. Concerted effort, alongside genetic testing to reduce in-breeding means that today the population is around 500, with 50 foals being registered each year.
