To mark British Equine Health Week, British Equestrian is running a seven-day programme to highlight health conditions – both common and not-so-common – in horses

British Equine Health Week will run from 28 November – 4 December 2022, during which time there will be educational content across British Equestrian’s social media channels aimed at raising awareness of horse health under the theme of ‘reducing disease risk together’.

The content will be provided by leading vets, many of whom are members of the British Equestrian Equine Infectious Diseases Advisory Group (EIDAG), and it will be aimed at anyone and everyone involved with horses from the occasional rider or private horse owner to the professional working with horses or running a busy yard.

With the emphasis on prevention of disease, the programme will cover topics such as vaccination and protection against parasites, as well as biosecurity at home and away and managing horses to maintain their good health.

Each day will highlight a specific disease to include equine influenza, strangles, equine herpes, tetanus and ringworm, as well as breeding and exotic diseases, and there will be top tips on introducing new horses to the yard and how to contain disease by understanding how it spreads and more

“Ensuring our horses are healthy and happy is a constant duty and a responsibility we all share – whether you’re an owner, groom, yard manager, practitioner, organiser or venue, we all must work together, said Celia Marr, Chair of British Equestrian’s EIDAG. “The 2019 equine influenza outbreak in Britain and the equine herpes virus epidemic of 2021, which shut down European competition, serve as reminders of the importance of good practice and we’re hopeful this week will give guidance and raise awareness for those responsible for horses.”

It’s intended that Equine Health Week will become a permanent annual fixture for British Equestrian with a different theme each year but always with the same aim of raising awareness of equine health and welfare in those living and working with horses.
