Horse and riders hacking

The British Horse Society (BHS) launches this year’s Ride Out UK, its annual campaign celebrating the joys of riding out, while raising money to protect and improve safe off-road routes

The BHS is encouraging riders to sign up for this year’s Ride Out UK, which is taking place between May and the end of October. There are several ways for riders to get involved and raise money, either through a Rideathon or regional leisure rides organised by the BHS.

Participants start by choosing their hacking distance target, anywhere between 5–1,000 miles, which their friends and family will sponsor them to ride, cycle or walk. They can then decide how to complete their miles. Option one is the Rideathon, where they’ll complete miles on a solo adventure around their local area – taking the time to explore new routes.

Alternatively, riders can sign up to take part in organised hacks over some of our most beautiful countryside, including riding through National Trust land and a guided horseback tour through the mesmerising Cotswold hills.

Last year, the BHS’s Ride Out UK campaign raised more than £24,500, which has provided funding for projects that open and enable safe, off-road routes for equestrians throughout the UK.

Protecting rights of way and enabling off-road access is incredibly important, with reports of four horses killed on Britain’s roads already this year. This follows 46 equine deaths reported to the BHS in 2021, with an additional 118 being injured and 130 human injuries.
