Horses outside pub

Pubs are making it easier than ever for equestrians to visit on horseback

With the recent heatwave bringing climate change to the forefront of people’s minds, pubs, especially those located in rural areas, are making an effort to welcome those arriving using greener transport – including those riding horses.

Brakspear, a chain of pubs, has begun highlighting their horse-friendly pubs on their website and app so that riders can be sure of a warm welcome when they arrive with their four-legged friends.

Brakspear Marketing Manager, Emma Sweet, said: “In these eco-conscious times we wanted to remind people that some of our pubs can cater for those arriving on horseback. A lot of our pubs were originally built as coach and horse inns, so it’s a great way to incorporate a pub’s history with its modern offering.”

Gordon Pool, landlord at horse-friendly pub The Bell in Tadworth, Surrey, said: “We’ve welcomed horses ever since we took over the two decades ago, and I’m sure The Bell was welcoming them long before that. Living in the countryside, lots of people ride horses, and we’re lucky to have several great routes in the local area, so stopping for a drink and a bite to eat on your horse is easy. We make sure that both rider and horse are well looked after.”
