Some studies have shown that as many as 50% of riders are struggling with stress, anxiety or depression, though the number could be far higher – but why is that? Riders Minds aims to raise awareness of suicide in its new release

Today (Friday 10 September) marks World Suicide Prevention Day – and after the tragic loss of international eventer, Matthew Wright, earlier this year, Riders Minds is proud to mark this occasion with the release of their poignant documentary.

In February this year the death of international eventer, Matthew Wright, shocked the equestrian community. In a first public interview since the tragic death of her husband, Matthew’s wife Victoria speaks openly about losing him, the formation of Riders Minds and the legacy they hope to create to help other people.

Riders Minds’ documentary explores mental health in the equestrian industry and asks the question – why do so many riders suffer with mental illness? The documentary explores the unique challenges that professionals and amateurs within equestrianism face, and speak to some poignant figures within the sport who’ve been brave enough to speak out only on the subject despite the potential to face criticism from their peers.

Victoria added: “We’ve lost so many riders to suicide and as an industry we have to do something about this now before we lose any more. The equestrian industry is seriously tough and although it can be the most amazing one to be in, it can also be the most unpleasant.

“Our documentary aims to raise awareness of suicide and some incredibly strong people were kind enough to share their own personal stories with us. The more people who have the courage to talk about the challenges, mental health, and the resources available, the better place we will make it.”

Riders Minds Documentary airs on Friday 10 September on YouTube at 8pm here (link: https://youtu.be/4vyMEz0YcEo).
