September 2024 Issue

While so many parts of the horse world remained steeped in tradition, there is an ever-increasing amount of research and innovation going into our sport – from safety equipment to clothing fabrics and tack to nutrition.

The net result is an increasing ability to make informed decisions to benefit not only ourselves but also our horses. A great example of this are developments in understanding of how best to help our horses thermoregulate. The extensive work done on the best way to cool horses began ahead of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where the combination of heat and humidity meant innovative ways to reduce core temperatures were required, particularly on cross-country day. The ongoing work in this area can only benefit our horses, especially in a changing climate, so make sure you’re up to speed on the best way to keep your horse cool this summer – experts Helen Reynolds and Emma Cornish explain all you need to know.

One of the most valuable things any rider can do is to ride plenty of different horses. But while the positives are clear-cut, riding unfamiliar horses can also be intimidating. In this issue, dressage star Annabella Pidgley shares her advice that will help you feel confident on different horses, develop a bond with your own horse and expand your riding horizons.

With such a long, wet winter and spring, it hardly feels like summer’s begun and we’re already planning for autumn, with our Burghley preview. But the H&R team doesn’t mind when it means a trip to Stamford is on the cards. Badminton might be the biggest sporting event in the country, but if you’ve not been to Burghley, you’re missing out. The atmosphere is amazing, the setting is stunning, and this year the field promises to be something special. In an Olympic year there are, inevitably, many horse and rider combinations at their absolute peak but who didn’t quite make the team-of-three cut. And you can bet that almost all of them will have their sights on the Burghley trophy… So, we’ll see you there!

Whether it’s time for a wardrobe refresh, or you fancy some window shopping, don’t miss the 161-page Shires catalogue with this issue of Horse&Rider!
