Blenheim Films will bring beloved Thelwell ponies to life in Merrylegs the Movie

Independent film company Blenheim Films has announced its upcoming live-action adaptation of Norman Thelwell’s famous cartoons. Merrylegs the Movie will be based on the artist’s beloved cartoon ponies and directed, produced and written by Candida Brady.

Director Candida Brady explained: “This is a dream come to true to bring the much-loved artist Norman Thelwell’s legacy to the big screen. These iconic characters are universally treasured, and we’ll be meticulous with the evolution of the ponies working with the very best in the field of creature animation to maintain Thelwell’s unique style, wonderful humour, and environmental spirit that his collection of cartoons represented. We can’t wait to introduce new audiences to the laughter, landscapes, and hilarious antics of Penny and the mischievous ponies.”

The feature-length adventure will entertain and inspire generations of equestrian enthusiasts, and it’s the first instalment in a planned franchise. The film will follow Penny and Merrylegs from their home at Willowbrook Riding Stables in Snowdonia, Wales.

Casting’s currently underway for Penny’s character, who’s based on Thelwell’s daughter, as well as Merrylegs! It’ll be tough to find the perfect pony to embody the cheeky but timid Merrylegs, but award-winning Casting Director Michelle Smith is sure to find the ultimate acting equine. The film’s set to release in 2023 to celebrate Norman Thelwell’s centenary.

Norman Thelwell’s daughter Penny Jones said: “I very much look forward to seeing Dad’s ponies coming to life on screen so a new generation can discover the iconic Thelwell pony – and their parents can rediscover characters they knew from his books when they were children.”
