Though there are a wide variety of rein styles available on the market, it’s up to you to decide which is best for you and your horse, dependant on the size of your horse and what circumstances you plan to ride in, as this will determine how much extra grip you need. Some of the most popular styles include:

• Plain – used for any discipline of riding, but quite popular for dressage riders who prefer a plain and classic look.
• Rubber-grip – a sleeve of rubber, which offers good, soft grip without losing durability.
• Continental – web reins with leather markers.
• Laced – give good grip and are commonly used in showing.
• Plaited – made from 5 strips of leather and plaited into a single strap, creating a smart look that also enables good grip.
• Half rubber – rubber on the inside of the rein and smooth leather on the outside.

Generally, reins are sold in four lengths: pony, cob, full and extra-full, with the width of the rein determined by matching it to the rest of your bridle. Most commonly, your choice of rein size will largely depend on both the size of your horse, and the size of your hands.
