Horseworld Trust foals

HorseWorld Trust is appealing for donations following its battle to save the lives of severely emaciated mares and their foals.

In 2021, HorseWorld was called to help rescue three heavily pregnant Thoroughbred mares from appalling conditions. The horses were found standing in a rancid barn with rotting bedding that had accumulated to hock height. All three mares were suffering from rain scald, lice and severely overgrown feet. After bringing them back to the safety of HorseWorld, it was a race against time to save the mares and their unborn foals.

The mares, named Lisa Jane, Pink Champagne and Tango, were given round-the-clock emergency veterinary care, but sadly after examination it was discovered that Tango had a fracture in her foot that had become infected. The heart-breaking decision was made to put her and her unborn foal to sleep to end their suffering.

The remaining two mares were being nursed back to health when Lisa Jane unexpectedly gave birth prematurely. The colt was so weak he was unable to stand on his own and so tiny that he needed to wear a dog coat to keep him warm. Thanks to the dedication of the vets and HorseWorld team looking after the colt, he survived and was named Thor.

Just a few weeks later, Pink Champagne also foaled, but the severe neglect she’d suffered had weakened her immune system and both she and her foal contracted a serious viral infection shortly after birth. Once again, the team leapt into action to try and save mother and foal. Thanks to the quick response of staff, the pair made a full recovery, and the foal was named Pink Gin – Ginny for short, in honour of her mum who bravely fought to survive.

HorseWorld’s Fundraising and Engagement Coordinator, Amy Williams, said: “Ginny and Thor will never know the cruelty and neglect that their mothers suffered because HorseWorld will always ensure their every need is met.”

Vet fees for the mares and foals reached £5,588.67 in total, and HorseWorld has set up a donation page for anyone wishing to contribute to their care, visit horseworld.org.uk/love
