Equine-Dentistry-Awareness-week

The BHS and the Equine Dental Clinic launch first Dental Awareness Week to improve equine dental health

The BHS has joined with the Equine Dental Awareness Week, aimed at alerting owners and keepers to the importance of dental health in horses and informing them on how to manage it. With the message ‘No pain? Check again!’, the week runs from 10–16 November 2023.

Studies have shown that up to 70% of horses have undiagnosed dental problems, which means many could be suffering in silence. Understanding of equine dental problems has significantly improved over the past 20 years, but many modern dentistry treatments are only possible if those problems are identified early.

The week aims to raise awareness of:

  • signs of dental problems – what could your horse be hiding?
  • importance of routine dental care every 6–12 months by a suitably qualified dental practitioner (vet or BAEDT/ category 2 WWAED dental technician)
  • the outcomes from your horse’s dental check

The BHS and the Equine Dental Clinic are providing a free two-hour webinar on 15 November as part of the awareness week. This will be presented by industry experts from the clinic, including Dr Chris Pearce and Dr Nicole du Toit. The webinar will explore the signs of dental problems, outline what to expect from your horse’s dental check and offer insight into issues, using real-life case studies. A free digital pack will be downloadable from the BHS website and will include a routine dental planner, as well as access to exclusive dental healthcare content.

Dr Chris Pearce and Dr Nicole du Toit, directors of the Equine Dental Clinic say:We are delighted to have teamed up with the BHS to highlight the importance of good regular dental care for horses. Spotting issues early on is the best way to prevent dental disorders that could seriously affect horse welfare, keep them working at their best and ensure prompt treatment for any problems.”
