All drivers now allowed to tow a trailer without taking a test

Horse being loaded into trailer

After months of waiting, the DVSA has passed the ruling that all drivers are now eligible to tow a trailer without taking a test

As of 16 December 2021, horse owners – and, of course, all other driving licence holders – across the country will now be allowed to tow a trailer without having to take an additional test. Nonetheless, it’s still advised that drivers undergo some form of formal training first, to ensure they’re keeping themselves and their equines as safe as possible.

The law formerly stated that anyone who’d passed their driving test after 1 January 1997 must pass a car and trailer towing test to tow anything heavier than 750kg MAM. However, the new legislation states that these drivers are now eligible to tow anything up to 3,500kg MAM. If you fall into this category, the DVLA will be updating your driving licence automatically to add category B+E when you get a new photocard driving licence, to show what you’re now allowed to tow.

The reason for the change in legislation is the government’s attempt to tackle the shortage of lorry drivers in the UK, to allow for more lorry tests to be taken.

The DVLA is issuing refunds to those who had booked a test, however drivers who’ve already taken and passed their trailer test will not receive a refund for any tests or training previously taken.
