Owners reminded to be on the lookout for signs of dehydration or overheating in their animals

The BHS has issued a warning to horse owners to be extra vigilant over their horses in the soaring temperatures we’re currently experiencing. With the thermometer recently registering in the high 20s, and with much of the summer still ahead of us and more heat to come, it’s vital for anyone caring for or riding horses to be aware of the risks such hot weather poses.

When the mercury rises, horses can become severely dehydrated or overheated and, if left untreated, this can even be fatal. Although any horse can be affected, the BHS is also highlighting the particular danger for horses with pink skin and those with grey or white hair, as they are the most susceptible to sunburn.

The BHS has issued important advice on how to keep horses happy and comfortable in the heat, such as ensuring they have constant access to water and shaded areas, and monitoring them for signs of discomfort. If possible, horses should be stabled during the day and turned out overnight.

BHS welfare campaigns officer Gabby Madders said: “Horses are affected by the sun in the same way as humans. So, during hot weather, a number of steps need to be taken to ensure horses are kept comfortable and healthy. Poor management can lead to lethargy, sunburn and dehydration, and, in severe cases, heatstroke. Horse owners also need to ensure high-factor SPF sun cream is applied liberally around sensitive areas, including the nose.
