Charles Owen’s latest design combines safety with style at an affordable price

If there’s one piece of equipment that’s vital for every horse rider, it’s the helmet. Due to its weight, the head is particularly vulnerable to injury in a fall as it’s often one of the first – if not the first – parts of the body to hit the ground and take the full impact. Forces can be considerable, so effective protection is essential.

Fortunately, modern technology has made it possible to greatly reduce the risks of head and brain damage thanks to extensive testing of helmets during manufacture, coupled with high-tech materials and innovative design. Added to this are formal safety standards that require a specific level of performance to be reached so that anyone wearing the helmet can be assured of its effectiveness.

Stylish protection

Helmet manufacturer Charles Owen has a long history of making top-quality riding hats to suit all individuals and budgets. The company works hard to ensure that its helmets not only offer the best protection possible but also look good at the same time. Its latest offering, the new EQx brand, fulfils both these criteria, with a safety level and sophisticated styling usually only seen on more expensive helmets.

The brand launches with its hero style, the Kylo, which took a year to develop and starts at an affordable £88 but with no loss of quality. Its sleek design is available in black or navy in either a matte or gloss finish and there are standard and wide-peak versions. This lightweight helmet is fully ventilated for comfort when worn and the dial fit means it can be easily precision adjusted according to head size.

Modern standards

The Kylo meets three international safety standards, including PAS015:2011, and it will also comply with the imminent changes to the European VG1 and US ASTM standards. And for customers seeking that extra level of protection against rotational forces, there’s an MIPS version of the Kylo.
