Grab the popcorn – it’s movie time!

We have 10 all-time favourite horsey films to keep you entertained during autumn and winter evenings 

Now the evenings are drawing in, thoughts start to turn to spending evenings on the sofa, favourite drink and snacks on hand, for some relaxing movie nights – and it’s so much the better if those films are about horses! If you’re stuck for ideas, we have some great movie suggestions to get you started.

1. War Horse – Albert and his horse Joey are inseparable, and when Joey is sold to the British cavalry, Albert follows him in the hope of being reunited with his best friend.
2. Black Beauty (1994) – A carriage horse recalls his life experiences and, in doing so, reveals the hardship and cruelties endured by working horses in Victorian times.
3. Secretariat – Big Red, also known as Secretariat, is a champion thoroughbred racehorse, who against all odds wins the American Triple Crown. The biographical film follows Big Red’s relationship with his owner, Penny Chedery, on his route to victory.
4. Spirit – An animated film that follows a wild stallion across the frontiers of the Old West, where he befriends a young human and finds love with a mare.
5. The Horse Whisperer – Following a severe accident involving her horse, Pilgrim, Grace enlists the help of horse whisperer Tom to help the pair recover from their trauma.
6. Racing Stripes – A baby zebra is rescued by a retired horse trainer, who names him Stripes. The young zebra then begins to dream about racing against thoroughbreds and, despite the odds, he’s determined to win.
7. Hidalgo – A Pony Express courier travels with his horse to Arabia to participate in a dangerous and gruelling race across the Najd desert in Arabia.
8. Dream Horse – Despite having no experience or money, Jan, a Welsh bartender, decides to breed and train a racehorse and she convinces her local community to support her in her quest.
9. Black Beauty (2020) – A wild mustang is transported to Birtwick Stables, where she comes across Jo Green, a fiery teenager. The pair develop a friendship but then find themselves separated. While facing many challenges, will Beauty ever meet her friend again?
10. The Black Stallion – A young boy, Alec, and a black stallion, The Black, are stranded on a desert island, where they form a strong bond. After their rescue and return to the US, Alec trains to be a jockey and his aim is to ride The Black in a prestigious race and win.
