Trailer owners driving training scheme

A new training scheme has been launched to provide drivers with the skills to safely tow a trailer in the wake of the changes that allowed most drivers to tow a trailer without any formal qualification

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is encouraging anyone who uses a trailer to undergo a new industry-led trailer accreditation scheme which provides those wishing to tow, whether it be privately or commercially, with the knowledge and skill to do so safely.

The training scheme covers large and small trailers, with specific modules focusing on different types of trailer use, such as horseboxes, plant trailers and car transporters.

DVSA is encouraging people who’re new to horsebox towing – as well as drivers who have been towing for many years but could benefit from a refresher – to get accredited training. Many businesses who use trailers will continue to encourage their drivers to get training but it’s also important to make sure drivers keep on top of these skills and refresh their knowledge. Using a training provider who is accredited under the new scheme will help reinforce existing knowledge and keep driver skills up to date.
