Millie Bright explains how her former equestrian roots have helped her reach her footballing goals

It’s a little-known fact that top female footballer Millie Bright has already had an earlier successful sporting career, albeit in the equestrian world, when she worked as a groom for international dressage rider Hannah Esberger-Hancock. And, in a recent interview she gave in host country Australia during the FIFA Women’s World Cup series, she revealed that the job prepared her well for her current role of captain of both the Chelsea and England women’s football teams.

Millie grew up around horses and her aim was always to be a dressage rider– that is, until she caught the football bug, which interrupted her equestrian career plans. It turned out that she excelled at the game and that led her to arrive at the difficult crossroads of having to choose between the sports, and we all know the answer to that dilemma.

On a video message played on Lionesses Down Under, Hannah Esberger-Hancock (Dengie sponsored rider) said how proud she was of Millie and that the dedication Millie shows in her current profession is the same as that she had when working on Hannah’s yard.

Millie added that while at Hannah’s yard, she learnt not only about the equestrian side of dressage, but also how to work well in a team, and this has proved a vital skill in her current leadership role.

Millie explained that she hopes to return to dressage at some point in the future but, in the meantime, her immediate focus is on World Cup final to be played against Spain on Sunday, 20 August, when she and the team hope to be bringing football home.
