Watch top showjumpers competing to win the coveted trophy at June’s Hickstead Derby Meeting

Taking place from 22–25 June 2023, the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting culminates in one of the most iconic showjumping classes in the world, the Al Shira’aa Derby.

The famous course, which is the same every year, features the 10’6” Derby Bank, the tricky Devil’s Dyke and the huge Open Water. It has only seen 65 clear rounds since 1961, when the class first took place, which is a measure of how difficult it is. Last year, just one rider managed to go clear and win the class.

Shane Breen, who had been trying to win the Derby for 17 years, rode the stallion Can Ya Makan to victory but can he retain the trophy this year? Competition will be tough with top riders from around the world hoping to make it theirs, including five-time runner-up Harriet Biddick.

The international showjumping starts on Thursday, 22 June, with the Derby Tankard, while Friday sees riders trying to secure their Derby qualification in the Agria Derby Trial. The highlight for Saturday is the super-fast British Speed Derby.

But the show is not only about international showjumping, as there are hundreds of national jumping classes for horses and ponies, plus championship showing, scurry driving and plenty more. There is something for the whole family, with a large shopping village, a funfair, bars, restaurants and street food stands to suit all tastes. There is also a huge range of hospitality options available.
