The Donkey Sanctuary in Manchester shows its artistic flair by providing seasonal enrichment for the resident herd

Did you think that pumpkins can only be used as decorations? Think again! For Hallowe’en, the staff at the Donkey Sanctuary carved some spooktacular creations out of pumpkins and put them on display around the centre at Abbey Hey in Manchester.

However, now Hallowe’en’s over, there’s no need for them to throw those pumpkins away because the flesh of the pumpkins will be cut into bite-sized pieces so the donkeys can enjoy them as an enrichment treat. Enrichment is very important for donkeys, as it provides them with mental stimulation and allows them to display their natural foraging behaviour.

The pieces of pumpkin might be offered in the form of string kebabs, along with other vegetables and fruit, which are then hung up for the donkeys to nibble on. The hollowed shell of the pumpkin can be used, too, as a container for enrichment foliage, including fresh herbs such as mint, coriander and parsley.

Don’t let the donkeys have all the fun, though. If you’re looking for a great way to get rid of your pumpkins, let your horse have them as a treat, too! As with any treat, feed it in small amounts and introduce gradually just as you would with new feed. And to encourage foraging behaviour, you could hide parts of the pumpkin in your horse’s haynet or around the field.

Like all novel food sources, feeding in moderation and under supervision is key.
