Horse owners encouraged to track rides and other journeys to help RVC monitor methods of disease transmission

An equine research project run by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), in partnership with the Equine Register, is providing much-needed donations to equine charities. The project encourages horse owners to track rides and other journeys with their horses via the Digital Stable app, with the aim of creating a record that will allow scientists to gain insight into the transmission and spread of infectious disease by analysing patterns of data.

Once signed up to the project, owners will be entered into a quarterly draw to win £500, plus another £500 for the equine charity of their choice. The first winner was Philip Wood from Kent, who recorded all his rides and journeys taken with his five-year-old mare, Robin. Philip chose Redwings Horse Sanctuary as his charity, making it the first beneficiary of the project,

Redwings invited Philip to the Redwings Ada Cole centre in Essex, where he was presented with the cheque and given a tour of the centre, which is home to more than 70 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.

Philip said: “I was so surprised to win the prize. I’ve recorded my rides for a while now and can see the importance of as many people as possible getting involved to help the RVC’s research. You never know, you could be the next winner!”

Whether you’re out hacking, competing, or transporting your horse for a lesson, by recording it through the Digital Stable app, you will be helping the RVC with its research.
