Ukraine-BEVA-2023

BEVA funds supply of generators to provide power for horse care in Ukraine

The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) is raising funds to supply 10 generators to provide power for vital care of injured and displaced horses in the Ukraine. The generators, costing £1,500 each, have been sourced in Germany and will be transported to a collection point in Poland. The co-ordination of deliveries is being managed by a Ukrainian vet who, prior to the war, co-ordinated educational conferences with the BEVA Trust in Kyiv.

Winter has been a considerable challenge for people and animals in the Ukraine, with enforced power cuts on entire communities and temperatures regularly dropping to -15C Emergency veterinary treatment and everyday care are almost impossible during power cuts when vets and carers are deprived of light, hot water and equipment.

BEVA Council member Alison Talbot who is leading the project said: “Most equine vets and horse owners have been in the situation of muddy fields, no light and no power and can sympathise on this basic level. But add to the struggle the dodging of shelling and the difficulty of communicating when there is no means of charging digital equipment, the situation is even more desperate.”

World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers added: “The provision of generators through BEVA Trust’s Power To Ukraine appeal will help enable vets to give much-needed treatment to those vulnerable horses.”

Funds for the generators are being raised through the BEVA Trust (BEVA’s charitable arm,) which, along with World Horse Welfare, is part of the British Equestrians for Ukraine project. BEVA worked closely with the Ukrainian Veterinary Society for many years prior to the war. Vets who once welcomed BEVA members to congresses in Kyiv are now fighting in the army as well as treating horses.

There is still time to donate through the BEVA Trust’s Power To Ukraine appeal via the JustGiving page and any surplus funds will go to general support for equines in the Ukraine.
