Deborah Auld rides in charity race at Wetherby on 3 November in aid of British Horse Society

A charity race will be held at Wetherby to raise money for The British Horse Society. All contestants who have applied to race have been fitting in training and riding around their normal ‘day jobs’. Deborah, 32 from Scotland, will be taking part in this event after setting herself a goal a year ago when she was diagnosed with cancer.

The last six months have been especially tough for Deborah as she started receiving chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. Deborah gained two stone due to the drugs and medication that were required to help her feel better, so she started personal training sessions at the end of June. This was then upped to twice a week in August, in preparation for the jockey test at the Northern Racing College.

The jockey test consisted of all jockeys taking part being put through their paces in a fitness suite, followed by saddling up and riding out on the gallops. Thankfully, Deborah passed the assessment, and all roads now lead to Wetherby where she’ll be riding her own horse Cheese and Wine, aka Vino.

Deborah said: “Horses helped get me out of bed throughout treatment and stopped me feeling sorry for myself, so I felt it only right that it was an equine charity I was supporting.”
