British Equestrian releases guidance on recognising and dealing with concussion after falls

The national governing body of equestrian sports, British Equestrian, has issued a set of guidelines aimed at helping riders recognise and deal with concussion following a head injury. It also advises on what action to take, both immediately after a fall or accident in which a head injury occurs and during the recovery period. This guidance comes following a call in 2021 by the UK Government for all sporting bodies to address concussion within their sport and its associated risks.

The new guidelines cover all equestrian disciplines at every level – including grooms, officials and event organisers. The six-page document provides information on how concussion happens, its symptoms, immediate treatment of head injuries and the recovery phase. Using advice from a medical practitioner, the Return to Riding programme in the guidelines is intended to help injured riders start riding again safely using a step-by-step process.

Olympic eventing team gold medallist Laura Collett said: “Concussion is something we just don’t take seriously enough in equine sport. We wouldn’t think twice if it was a welfare issue with our horses, so why should we risk our own health and wellbeing?

“Having experienced major brain trauma and concussion first-hand, I’d urge everyone to take the time and read the guidance, educate themselves and use the resources provided. We all have a part to play, however you enjoy horses”.
