Hitting the big screens across the UK, donkeys to continue to capture hearts worldwide in an Oscar-nominated film

The Donkey Sanctuary is one of many organisations that aim to shine a light on donkeys around the world, and it’s thrilled that the long-overdue opportunity to give donkeys a moment in the public eye has finally arrived.

The film EO which has been nominated for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Oscars also took home the Jury Prize in Cannes last year. Celebrating donkeys and their relationships with humans, it also exposes how vulnerable they are and explains the varied challenges that they face across the world.

The film is shot from the perspective of the title character and tells the story of a donkey’s journey through the hands of different owners – some that treat him nicely and others who, sadly, do not.

Commenting on the brand-new movie, Faith Burden, Executive Director at The Donkey Sanctuary, said: “The feature film EO is beautifully shot and offers a rare opportunity to view the world from a donkey’s perspective. The portrayal and billing of the donkey as the central character clearly demonstrates the film-maker’s deep appreciation of these sensitive and intelligent animals.”

Faith continues: “The Donkey Sanctuary was not involved in the making of the film EO. However, we welcome the opportunity it affords to correct public misconceptions about donkeys, which can result in their ill-treatment. We hope this poignant tribute to donkeys, which recognises their intrinsic value, in and of themselves, will also elevate their status in the public consciousness.”

The movie is now showing at cinemas. For more information visit thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk
