No matter what level my horses are at, incorporating polework into their exercise plans is really important to me – the benefits are endless, as are the options of layouts to try. But, like many riders, I don’t always have time on my side, so if you’re in need of some simple but effective exercises to help you through the winter, I have just the thing for you.

The simple things

Four poles and four cavaletti, that’s all you need for my three exercises. They’re quick and easy to set up – the perfect addition to your winter schooling sessions. The benefits of poles and cavaletti don’t stop there, though.

By having specific points to aim for, you’ll become more disciplined in your riding and be better able to identify areas of weakness – in both you and your horse, so you can work with your instructor to improve them. It’s been proved scientifically, too, that poles increase range of motion, so why wouldn’t you make them part of your horse’s workout plan?

Walk the walk

Angled poles are great for developing proprioception and in this exercise, along with the straight poles, they will really encourage your horse to drop his head and neck because he will want to look what’s going on underneath him so he can put each foot in the right place. As a result of lowering his head, your horse will naturally engage his core as he lifts each limb.

Rider pointers

As your horse travels through this line, avoid rushing him with too much leg. Instead, gently press against his sides with both of your legs to maintain the energy and encourage him to step cleanly over each pole – nagging him might distract his focus and cause him to trip. Plus, he’ll actually have to work harder the slower he goes. Make sure you allow with your hands slightly, too, to let your horse stretch his head and neck down.
