Increasing numbers of us are caring for what are – technically – veteran horses. Whether you’ve taken on a schoolmaster or have been a partnership for a decade or more, older horses have many advantages and plenty to offer.

But while veterinary and management changes mean horses can look forward to much longer careers than in the past, it’s important to take age into consideration in your horse’s routine. In this new series, we’ll look at four different areas that will help you optimise your care of, and time with, your senior equine pal.

In this issue, we’re looking at groundwork. While you might consider it something for young horses who are just starting out, groundwork can offer older horses a means of exercise and mobility maintenance but without the wear and tear of working under saddle. In fact, groundwork is beneficial whether or not he’s still being ridden.

Why groundwork?

Doing enough but not too much with your older horse can be a tricky balance to strike. If he’s not yet ready to withdraw from working life, introducing a little groundwork into his routine will bring a multitude of benefits.

When you think about working your horse from the ground, lungeing is probably the first thing that comes into your head. But it doesn’t have to begin and end with giving him a spin on a circle. The possibilities extend way beyond this when you bring in the use of poles, transitions and different lungeing styles.

Doing some work without a rider allows your horse to move freely and can often be a good way to dispel tension or resistance. In turn, you can focus on rhythm, mobility and control, while putting your horse through his paces.

TOP TIP

Transitions and half-halts are really important when lungeing your horse on straight lines. Too much speed can cause him to start to tilt his body and motorbike around the turns. Keep the tempo under control to maintain his balance and straightness.
